I am getting an error that states that I have my appdata and system folders are in a "some of all files unprotected." I am new to unraid (haven't purchased the license yet as I am still running it through the paces) and I originally had 4 1TB hard drives that I through in it. Then I found out that a cache drive and another parity drive would be a great idea. I put in a cache drive (osz vector 256GB SSD) and a 2TB Seagate I had. I started getting this error after I put those in. I have done a parity check, changed the setting in the shares to prefer (and even tried yes), tried invoking move several times and I still get that error. I thought that it might need a reboot and that didn't seem to work. I deleted the dockers I had and that didn't work. I disabled both docker and vm manager and still I get the same error. Please enlighten me on what I am missing.

Unless you have multiple cache disks configured for redundancy, then any files on cache are not protected. This is normal. If you don't want to add another cache then you can backup the appdata share with the CA Backup plugin. system share can be easily recreated.

So the cache drives don't replicate to the array? In order for me to have some redundancy I would need 2 cache drives that would be mirrored for it to work?

For shares set Use Cache = Yes files are moved to the array when mover runs (typically scheduled to run overnight).   These is no real-time replication.

For Use Cache = Only/Prefer where the files stay on the cache you need at least 2 drives in the cache for redundancy on the cache.  You also need the cache to use BTRFS RAID1 (which is the default).

If you want further advice, post a diagnostic so we can get a more complete idea of your configuration. Tools - Diagnostics, attach complete diagnostics zip file to your next post.

If the cache is set to move to the array with mover then it is not mission critical to have a second SSD for the cache. Therefore I shouldn't have this error message correct? From what it sounds like the second SSD is for redundancy until the mover is invoked.

 

I am probably going to get another SSD just for speed. Do you have to have the same size SSD for the cache (or same make and model)?

Think of it more as an indicator than an error. As an indicator, it is correct. Any data on cache is unprotected if you don't have a redundant pool.

 

If you are using 2 SSDs, since they will be mirrors, they will only have the capacity of the smaller so there is no point in having one of them larger. They don't have to be the same make or even the same size, but just be aware that the total capacity of the mirrored pool will be the size of the smaller of the 2 drives.
