Just that also make me think does your friend connect SMR disk to AHCI and got different result. Btw below are good article. https://zonedstorage.io/introduction/smr/#smr-implementations Drive Managed allows plug-and-play deployment without modifying host software. It accommodates both sequential and random writing, but can result in highly unpredictable device performance. https://zonedstorage.io/getting-started/smr-disk/ Edited September 1, 20196 yr by Benson

It has all the appearance of some component throttling back when it gets too hot... (I did not take the time to go through this entire thread but I would be having a look at any SATA controllers. I know that many of them tend to run hot under the best of conditions and you are are certaining pushing the edge of that envelope. I would look at installing (temporarily) a fan to blow across any SATA controller heat sinks.) EDIT: if you have a SATA card without a heatsink on the controller chip that would be a red flag situation to me! Edited September 1, 20196 yr by Frank1940

EDIT: if you have a SATA card without a heatsink on the controller chip that would be a red flag situation to me! Well it is very possible, I have temperature problems in summer with the server. It is possible that the 5 minute stop. lower the temperature sufficiently and work properly again. If it is that as soon as autumn / winter arrives. I will not need this workarround. Thank you.
September 5, 20196 yr Author I have managed to lower the temperature of the controllers but I still have the same problem. Both the controller, as the SAS expander and the disks have an acceptable temperature after more than 6 hours of operation. Edited September 5, 20196 yr by jvdivx
