August 30, 20196 yr Back again guys! I've been re-jigging a lot of drives recently and have resynced my DUAL parity a corresponding number of times. Each time I think to myself 'is this the best way'. Buy that I mean, disabling BOTH parity drives in one fell swoop. What if the unexpected ever did happen? Would I be safer to disable a parity drive, resync, disable the other and re-resync(?). Would take longer but would it work and, more importantly better protect my data. What's best practice when resyncing dual parity?? Potential pitfalls?
August 30, 20196 yr Community Expert If they need resyncing I assume they are out sync, depending on how much it might not help to keep one.

I've been 'emptying' a few disks using unbalance and therein leaving an empty drive which i remove and replace with a disk from another server (also being emptied but containing valid data which i am rolling up). So, i do have the original empty disk and a pair of synced up parity disks when i start to 'resync' the drive from the outgoing server, still with me? As i have a couple more to do would it be better to just resync using one parity drive, i assume that if the parity itself ails i can just slot in the other alongwith the 'old' emptied drive and away we go? Just wondered what's most secure way of doing this. Two parity drives are fine for normal running but not so good when you're resyncing, just seems to be a big risk that could be avoided maybe? Yes, after doing a new config, and if the resync is done in maintenance mode, if you mount the disks there will always be some sync errors, though usually not critical, but you couldn't use the array during the re-sync for the old parity/disk combo to remain valid.
