September 4, 20196 yr I am looking to build my first UnRAID machine and I am hoping I can get some advice on the suitability or otherwise of the hardware/setup I am looking at. What I am currently running and looking to replace: A Windows 10 PC that is getting a bit long in the tooth. Here is the spec: i5 750 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Gigabyte P55M-UD2 12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz 931GB SAMSUNG HD103SJ (SATA ) 223GB SanDisk SDSSDA240G (SATA (SSD)) - system drive 1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (SATA ) Some 1000W PSU A QNAP TS-453U-RP with 3 x 3TB WD Red drives. I run Plex server on there and have run a couple of Docker containers on it, but it is very loud and very hot so I only turn it on occasionally. A Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant I'll be looking to reuse the PSU and graphics card from the the Windows PC, and all the drives. I have a few other hard drives kicking around that I may throw in. My needs are as follows: A Windows 10 gaming VM. This machine will replace my current machine and will reuse the graphics card I already have. It needs to run at least as well as the current machine, given the age of my current hardware it will hopefully be better. I am probably ok with starting from scratch rather than moving the existing installation. I understand I can use my existing Windows 10 licence as I log in with a Microsoft account. Plex server hosting 1, maybe 2 streams maximum. A few Docker containers hosting game servers (Minecraft, Factorio etc) that I or one of a small number of friends could spin up occasionally. Only need to run one at a time probably. Container for home assistant, probably, may keep that on the Pi. Bittorrent client Maybe Sabnzbd etc. or whatever is the current way of doing such things, haven't done newsgroups in a while Would like it to run cool and quiet, but doesn't have to be silent. The storage space I have for now is probably sufficient but a bit of expandability would be nice. I think I want an additional SSD for cache + redundancy, although I am not super clear on how the cache works (see below for my question about the Windows VM). I am looking not for the best, but for good value for money. I have been running the same mobo/processor for 9 years and I am still reasonably happy with it. Hardware I am considering: Ryzen 7 2700 - £190 MSI X470 mobo £110 16GB memory - £71 (Is this enough?) Additional SATA PCIe card - there seem to be loads of cards for about £20-£30, not sure what to look for here 500 GB SSD - £62 I may use my existing case for now, but I might treat myself to a Fractal Define R6 - £120 I have a budget of about £500 but am willing to go over that for a good deal. I am confused about SSDs, the cache and VMs. I guess I can have the system drive of the Windows VM in the cache only, then install games to a vdisk that is in the storage pool? Then periodically backup the VM to the storage pool? What I am asking is, will have 2 SSDs give me the flexibility to have a cache and to run the VM from the SSD?
