Faulty Disk - What now ???

Featured Replies

So when to watch a movie last nite and got a notice server unavailable checked my little unraid server and found this.

Disk 4 in error state

this is my first disk fail and this is all still new to me. so forgive my noob questions  I assume I go buy a new 3tb disk? then I find the faulty disk ( do i shut down the server to do this) replace the faulty disk , restart server ,PRAY & WAIT or is there more I need to do.

Disk dropped offline so there's no SMART, but looks more like a controller problem, reboot the disk should come online (but remain disabled) and post new diags.

will i have to wait for the parity check or can i skip it since it just did that yesterday evening

If it's doing a parity check it's for other reasons, and in this case it would be a read check, but you can cancel.

Disk looks fine, most likely a controller problem, Marvell controllers are not recommended, one of the reasons is that they have a tendency to drop disks without a reason, you need to rebuild the disabled disk on top of the old one (or using a new one), and recommend getting rid of that controller or it most likely will happen again.

Thank you, Now for the NOOB question how do I rebuild the disabled disk , also since i'm still new to this will changing out the controller just be shutting the server down and replacing the controller and re starting the server or is there something more I will need to know?

once again thank you for all your help

If you want to rebuild on top:

This, but don't get a raid controller, just plain HBA.

Do you really mean pre-clear?    If so then this is not required before using a disk with Unraid although some users like to use it to do an initial stress test of a drive if they are not sure of its status.    The only way to speed up preclear is to omit some of its stages.
