November 7, 201015 yr -I just fired up my UnRaid server last week. My initial parity check is fine. When I run another parity check (monthly check - as recommended by others), is my current parity lost during the actual running of the re-check? -Also, everything has been running extremely smoothly except that several times while copying files from my WHS to my UnRaid system, the copying stops and I get an error code of 0x8007003 AND a message telling me that the connection to the Unraid server was lost (I can't recall the exact message - sorry). The first few times that I click the "retry" button (in the standard message pop-up window), the copy process refuses to start. This is despite the fact that I can log into the server via Windows Explorer AND I can access files on both servers (WHS & Unraid). Eventually, if I click the "retry" button enough times, the copy process will continue. Could this problem be related to the fact that I am pre-clearing a 2TB drive at the same time that I am copying files? Thanks.
November 7, 201015 yr Parity protection absolutely NOT lost during parity check. As far as the copy stalling, sounds more like a networking problem. Might try making unRaid the local master. The preclear should not affect this.
November 7, 201015 yr Author Thanks much. I wish I had switched to UnRaid a couple of years ago. With the help of this forum, building my first computer/server and getting UnRaid running was unbelievably simple. Other than my slight copy glitch, everything worked flawlessly. The pessimist in me worries a bit about this website going down again (as it did a couple of months ago) - permanently - if Tom ever checks out. As a novice to this (and manually typing commands), without it, I'd be in very big trouble. Nonetheless, Tom may be a recluse, but he is a genius! And, several other people on this forum are quite bright as well. By the way, the parts that I used (from Newegg) are listed below. Yes, I realize that the MB/CPU/Ram are very much overkill, however I figured that I'd get bigger, faster parts in case this whole UnRaid thing didn't work out and I had to go to something else. In the big scheme of things, it didn't cost me that much more AND, the cpu is pretty decent as far as power consumption is concerned: -NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Case with 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays65117069 (Quantity 1) ... I cannot over-estimate enough how loud this case is - an earplug requirement might be a bit of an exaggeration, but nonetheless, a noisier case would be hard to come by. -NORCO C-SFF8087-4S Discrete to SFF-8087 (Reverse breakout) Cable - OEM65117069 (Quantity 2) -NORCO C-SFF8087-D SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 Internal Multilane SAS Cable - OEM65117069 (Quantity 4) -CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-750HX 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply62482974 (Quantity 1) -ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard65117069 (Quantity 1) -Intel Core i5-660 Clarkdale 3.33GHz LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80616I566065117069 (Quantity 1) ... you don't need thermal paste for this because it is already on the included fan. -CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C965117069 (Quantity 2 kits for 8GB total) -SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS SAS RAID Controller65125431 (Quantity 2) -VisionTek VTK Rad7K 64P Radeon 7000 64MB 64-bit DDR PCI Video Card65181551 (Quantity 1) ... the problem with a separate video card is that when I attempted to remove it from this motherboard (after getting my system running) is that the system wouldn't boot. Thus, I had to leave it installed (which wastes extra power). -Western Digital Caviar Black WD2001FASS 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive62868625 (quantity 3 to start with) Again, many, many thanks.
November 7, 201015 yr Author One more thing that I failed to mention (for anyone contemplating jumping from Windows Home Server v1). Copies to UnRaid are several TIMES faster (not merely 2 or 3 MBs per second either) than to WHS. AND, there are no stuttering video problems if watching them while copying files in the background. All-in-all, UnRaid has been everything that I'd hoped it to be.
