November 7, 201015 yr There are a lot of hardware players (PCH, Tvix, Dune, XBOX, HTPC, etc.) being used based on the previous poll. I am curious what media management/jukebox software users are using to feed the media stored on unRAID to their hardware players. If you select "Other" please post what you are using, and I'll see if I can modify the poll to include it, and you can change your vote. I think this will be useful for making a plugin for unRAID 5.0 to easily add media management/jukebox software to unRAID.
November 7, 201015 yr At the moment i'm playing my movie files with the Tvix 6600. Using CIFS/NFS shares. I'll stream my music to my Squeezebox. So backend Squeezebox Server.
November 8, 201015 yr I'm using a Media PC with Windows 7 on it. I have Media Player Classic as the default media player. With the help of some additional codecs installed, it does the job. The search facility in Windows 7 does a good job in finding certain movies, but i have a good movie structure based on the genre of the movies, well it helps the wife find what she likes
November 8, 201015 yr BubbaQ, if you will you have to modify the poll. Add Plex as mediaplayer. Already 2 Plex users voted.
November 8, 201015 yr Once the poll options are up I don't think you can change them. It is not that big a deal anyway, Plex is for all intents and purposes XBMC. I realize that it is a fork and becoming its own application, but it is still very similar to XBMC.

Yes your absolutely right, but what I'm curious about is how many Apple users we have in this community.

I am entirely a Mac person and run no windows machines of my own (save for a VM I need very rarely) in my house. I ended up going the Linux XBMC (using openelec) on an ION2 setup because it was the most appliance like feel I could get. Of course I intended to only use the machine to view content from my server so it was the logical choice for me.

I just bought my first Apple device a iPhone. It's a awesome phone, much much better as a Windows Mobile device (i had 2 Mobile devices). I think I'm in love... Very interesting distro Openelec. It is booting very fast. Just checked out a youtube video. Thanks for sharing this information.
November 8, 201015 yr How do I change my vote? Can you not just vote for Plex? Edit: hmm, no of course not. Good question
November 9, 201015 yr The new release Plex 0.9 has stepped away from XMBC. Biggest change has been the new database structure and server client model. The new server client structure makes it possible for one Mac to act as the server and push out content to other Macs, itouch, ipad and iphone devices. It's still very much a beta release and not all the planned features are active. But, the development speed is pretty impressive with incremental updates being pushed out very regularly. Also, active development on plug-ins for other services. Only tweak that I had to do to get it working more smoothly with my UnRaid server was to increase the cache time to the max, such that it would give some time for the UnRaid HDDs to spin up, or it would sometimes freeze the Plex client. I would suggest it for anyone who has spare mac hardware to play around with. There are also people run Plex with Hackintoshes too.
November 11, 201015 yr The new server client structure makes it possible for one Mac to act as the server and push out content to other Macs, itouch, ipad and iphone devices. I thought that i heard they gonna support Linux and Windows in the future. So then we can install the server software onto unRAID.

Currently I haven't seen any concrete plans for non-Mac support, but with them partnering with LG they have said that they would like to get Plex on many other platforms as possible. The LG Netcast is supposed to be ready sometime in 2011, but again no real details yet. Haven't heard if the server is going to be only Mac based or will include other platforms for LG Netcast. There is a community based Windows Plex client in alpha stage. But, the future looks very good, given how active they are in development and interactions with the community.
November 13, 201015 yr I would love to be able to run Plex directly from my soon to be unraid box. That with an apple tv g2 and you have a pretty sweet setup on the cheap.
January 2, 201115 yr I voted YAMJ because I use it on my main TV through my PCH C-200. Although I also use XBMC on 2 classic xobox machines in my office and the kids playroom. I recently ceased using pyTivo because of its inability to support iso format.
February 17, 201115 yr Im a big big xbmc fan currently running on my main pc (win7x64) connected up to the living room telly, but I have an xs35gt on the way...!
February 18, 201115 yr openelec xbmc SMOKING fast as no OS using up memory for nothing ... w7 with xbmc always at least 1.2 gb ram used openelec xbmc it barely moves over 512 mb love it
February 18, 201115 yr I think I'm now on Plex for good (it's also slowly going multiplatform). The ability to have Plex's media library in one central location served by a media server application of sorts allows me to access my media from ANY plex thin client ANYWHERE I am.. I have Plex for my Mac mini, Plex for AppleTV2, Plex for iPhone and iPad .. the library is manageable via a beautiful web interface and with a small Bookmarklet, I can stream any video from my library that's on my unRAID from the web. Plex is also being bundled into new LG TVs and BD players.. Basically, I look at XBMC now and think "meh"... Oh.. and the ability to start watching something on my home theatre, stop it, pick up the ipad/iphone, go upstairs or y'know, do some business, and quickly continue watching the same media from the same location I had stopped it on my home theatre is most definitely drool worthy.
February 18, 201115 yr I think that last part (cloud-ish pause/resume spots) is doable with XBMC but it involves using a centralized SQL database and configuring your clients to use that. EDIT: Here's the LifeHacker writeup on it for XBMC: http://lifehacker.com/#!5634515/how-to-synchronize-your-xbmc-media-center-across-every-room-in-the-house
February 18, 201115 yr Plex Media Server windows is out now and hopefully the linux versions are not so far behind. For those people who also have windows based HTPC and use XBMC there is a addon called PleXBMC which will allow you to access Plex Media Server libraries. Right now, everything is new and a bit buggy, but it bodes well for the future.
