Drive letters changing after spin down

Featured Replies

So bit of an unusual one here, I'm running unraid 6.7.2 on an HP DL380p Gen8. Recently i had to remove my lsi hba card to free up a pci slot and have had to use the on board P420i in HBA mode for my disks, this has been working well for the most part. I'm not seeing smart details in the gui instead having to use smartctl but that is minor.

The main issue is when the disks spin down and then spin back up the p420i is seeing it as a drive being removed and then re-added, this is causing the drive letter to change, unraid is expecting disk 7 to be SDH but now its SDJ this is causing read errors and unraid thinks the drive has failed so it disables and emulates it.

The P420i controller is running firmware version 8.00, here's is the event and see below that for full diagnostics.

The obvious fix would be to go back to the lsi card or possibly even disable disk spin down, but I'd prefer not to if possible so hopefully someone can help.

this has been working well for the most part

After this you go on to describe how it is working terribly. Did it work for a while and this is new behavior?

Sorry what i meant to say was the performance is better, read and writes are alot faster than the lsi card.  I've only been using this hp hba for a few days now and this issue has be happening multiple times since then.

Were you not using the onboard controller before this? Is it in RAID mode?

  • Author

I was using an LSI PCI hba card before this and I did not have this problem, I needed the PCI slot so I switched to the on board P420i, I have set this to HBA mode.
