So, ive tried the wiki that hasnt been updated since someone invented electricity.

i've tried the forum but theres been a huge lack of response.

i've tried googling but every result seems as outdated as the wiki.

 

now im out of ideas...

 

so i guess this is one last try before i go with some other solution than unraid where i can get help.

 

how would i know what to buy for my unraid build if i want all hardware to be compatible with unraid (as in raidcards, expansioncards, backplanes.. whatever)?

it will only serve as a storage. no vm, docker or any kind of serverapplications running other than sharing files over SMB.

and im going to use some kind of 24+ x HDD rackmounted chassi.

For controller get an LSI HBA, you can also use the onboard SATA ports, any SAS2/SAS3 backplane should work fine, avoid SAS1 since some are limited to 2TB.

Actually i guess i would need two LSI HBA for 24 HDD.

Any specific LSI HBA or just any of all the hundreds that exists?

Any LSI with a SAS2008/2308/3008/3408 chipset in IT mode, e.g., 9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, 9400-8i, etc and clones, like the Dell H200/H310 and IBM M1015, these latter ones need to be crossflashed.

 

There are also some LSI HBAs with 16 or even 24 ports, but they are usually more expensive than two or three 8 port HBAs, or one 8 port HBA plus a SAS expander.
