How do I create a share? (Also - Mac OS X forum - where are you?)

Featured Replies

I have tried to search the forums, but honestly don't find the answer to a very basic question;

How do I create a share?

Also; I want the drives to show up as ONE joint file area and that goes for the share as well... I'm not interested in spreading info over 15 different hard drives manually...

At the moment - I set up the system at work where I have access to a PC, but I'm going to use the system in an OS X environment. I would very much appreciate a sub-forum for OS X, which I don't see a lot in this forum generally speaking...

There is nothing really specific to OS X, the shares works the same way as any other windows shares.

I use only OS X with my unRAID box, with no problem.

As for the 15 different drives, that's the way unRAID works at the moment, you can do ONE joint file area with user share, but it is only supported in reading until tom release a newer version.

In OS X, if you don't know and the unRAID machine doesn't show up in network, just power up the finder, go to "GO", "Connect to Server…" and type smb://ip of the unraid machine and "Connect" a menu should pop up with the 15 different share.

Oh oh... If it's fifteen shares... It's pretty useless for example...iTunes. to use...

I had the understanding that this feature was implemented in version 4? I'll just have to wait. Tom (whoever this is?), can you assure that this feature is on its way? Otherwise, I'll just have to sell my newly bought 15-bay 1500-machine from Lime and go with Infrant's solutions or other...

Spend a little time reading this forum, and the answers will be there.

It will be time well spent, as you will get an understanding as to where Unraid is comming form and where it is going.

Infrant is a different product, with pros and cons compared to Unraid.

Thankyou for stating the obvious. I have used the search-button. I'm also pretty sure I read in this forum (under 3.0) that the feature I'm requesting would be implemented in 4.0. Which I based my buying decision on.

Facts remain: if I can present my drives as ONE share in OS X (writeable) I will be very satisfied with the product. Any advice on getting this to work, will make me truly happy.

If you had read the 4.0 forum, you would see it has been out for a while (as has 4.1) and writeable shares is not yet implemented.  Reading old posts about the future tends to be less accurate that current posts written about the present.  Yes, another "thank you for the obvious", but sometimes the obvious is not absorbed by all.

That feature appears to be "any day now" so selling your unraid seems to be a bit hasty.

Welcome aboard!

Well it is not working now, Tom is working on it, but it is not there yet.

There is a workaround to acces all drive in one share (using symlink or "shortcut") but it would only work in iTunes if you create artists folder in advance.

Any advice for the message "Could not connect to the server since the name or password was incorrect"? This even though I have not specified or even had the chance to enter any password/login... What can be wrong?

no idea, I always access unraid with the ip only and no id/password (it is one of its shortcoming for some people)

Sorry. Array was offline... (!)

I'm using my unRAID for Mac OS X as well.  I have one 750 GB drive dedicated to iTunes and another 500 GB dedicated to a number of TV shows I weak link into iTunes (basically save them there and option drag them into iTunes so it doesn't copy them to its folder).

I'm thinking I'm going to make this a bit more flexible by symlinking the TV Shows directory on one volume, the Movies to another and leave the rest for my music.  I've got the rest of my 5 TBs dedicated to movie rips outside of the iTunes world.
