Can't create user shares

Featured Replies

First time user with new UnRAID build.  Trying to create user shares and when I hit apply then the page refreshes but nothing shows up.

Console says:

mkdir: cannot create directory '/mnt/usr/test5/': no such file or directory

chmod: cannot access '/mnt/usr/test5/': no such file or directory

Syslog says;

Nov 14 03:59:25 Tower emhttp: shcmd (41): mkdir '/mnt/user/test5'

Nov 14 03:59:25 Tower emhttp: _shcmd: shcmd (41): exit status: 1

browsing to flash->config->shares shows that a test5.cfg file was created with the desired settings.  There is a /mnt directory in the filesystem, but no /mnt/usr.  What is going on here?

Have you tried it from the web interface? Make sure user shares are enabled there.

  • Author

Creation was attempted fro the web interface (user shares are enabled).  Only thing done from console was checking status.

restart the SMB service?

If there is no /mnt/user, then something else is going on that is unusual.  You might attach a copy of your syslog to your next post if you don't get it figured out.

Problem still exists.  Entire syslog is to long to post, but the last few lines show the result of trying to create share "movies".  This is a test system running on some fairly old hardware.  Could that be part of the problem?

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm running into the same issue on 5.0beta2.  Did you ever get this resolved?

For fun, try going to say /mnt/disk1 and creating the directory there instead. Then, start and stop the array and see if that new directory appears as a user share on the share settings page.

Peter

I 'reset' yesterday after I wrote that.  It's currently running preclears, if it has the same problem, i'll try it again.

Thanks

Just throwing this out there, but did you run the permissions on the 5.0beta?  Am I remembering correctly?  I thought I read in the install file that it was necessary to run permissions before doing anything.  I don't use 5.0beta so not sure if that is correct or could possibly be the reason for that.

Creating the directory wouldn't have done it, it is a shfs(?) file system...  with it's own mount point..  The fix was to reboot after enabling user shares :)

browsing to flash->config->shares shows that a test5.cfg file was created with the desired settings.  There is a /mnt directory in the filesystem, but no /mnt/usr.  What is going on here?

I'm having the same problem on 4.5.6. I forgot to capture my system log because I though if I rebooted it would show up :(. I was trying to create a "Movies" share. I did see something similar to the quote below in the terminal window as I realized I needed my syslog, but it had already started the power down process.(of course instead of test5 I had Movies)

mkdir: cannot create directory '/mnt/usr/test5/': no such file or directory

chmod: cannot access '/mnt/usr/test5/': no such file or directory

After reboot I still had nothing on the web interface and nothing in my networked places.

I can also browse flash->config->shares and Movies.cfg shows up. I am not sure how to check:

There is a /mnt directory in the filesystem, but no /mnt/usr...
Do I type cd /mnt at the console? and if so then what?

Disk1 is the only disk I have in the array, don't know if that helps at all.

Syslog_Restart_After_Failed_Share_Create-12-10-2010.txt

FIXED

Ah, I see I had not formatted my drive. So I formatted the disk and when I go to my network places I don't see an icon for Tower, but if I type \\tower in the address bar it shows up with a folder called disk1 with nothing in it and flash which is all the files on my USB drive, but no Movie share. Why would there be a disk1 when I didn't create a disk1 share?

Can I just recreate the share in the Web GUI? Or will this corrupt files since there already is a Movies.cfg in the shares folder on the flash drive?

After I formatted the disk. I used the web gui to recreate the share. The Movies.cfg file for the share updated on the flash drive and is now visible on My Network Places and on the Web GUI. I would think since the file on the flash drive updated everything should be fine. :)
