So how do I actually get to view the virtual machine to run the install? In the video once you start it the menu option changes from 'Webui' to 'VNC Remote' and then you can connect to the machine to run through the install.

SMH...... Finally realized what you were getting at. I must have watched the video 10 times and never picked up the that he clicks on the VMS tab and selects the Macinabox icon there, not the one in the Docker tab. All good now, sorry for the noise!

Well this is a new one. I have not modified anything related to MIB or it's container - and today when I booted it up I got this error and I can't proceed.

See attached for error and log.

Any ideas what I can do to get it back and operational?

Change your machine type to something higher than 3.1? Did you upgrade to the 6.9 beta or something?

I did not upgrade to 6.9.  I am on 6.6.7.

The machine type was unchanged - it remains at 3.0. That's as high as it goes :|

Thx

Update: I tried to create another MIB VM - and when I restarted my array the new VM was there. (yay)

BUT when Is started it - I got the same errors as I did w/ my original VM and can not continue.

Read the recommended post pinned at the top of every page on this topic.

I took the XML file in that post and tweaked it for my system and Catalina to make this:  but am getting this error: "Cannot access storage file '/mnt/user/domains/MacinaboxCatalina/macos_disk.qcow2' (as uid:0, gid:100): No such file or directory"

Any ideas?

However your server's hardware must be 'fairly' modern to run a macOS VM. You are going to need a CPU that supports SSE 4.2 & AVX2 for macOS Mojave and above to work. Both Intel and AMD processors are fine to use.

I'm running an older Xeon 2697 V2. I'm guessing since that only supports AVX and not AVX2, I'm out of luck then, right? I just want to verify that's correct.

Don't worry, it was an error, you need only avx, not avx2 and your cpu is perfectly fine for mac os; take into account that Big Sur runs on xeon v1 on my setup.

I searched but couldn't find anything on this, but is replacing the EFI folder still a 'thing'? The associated video for Macinabox doesn't seem to mention it, but older versions of videos has this as a step. Because I did this and tried to remove the qcow image and I only boot to an EFI shell. So I am not sure how to remove the dependency on that qcow image.

You need a bootloader to boot mac os, clover or opencore and you have 2 choices:

1- (NOT PREFERRED) replace the efi folder (replace the original apple efi with that of clover/opencore) in the efi partition of the os (on the vdisk of mac os), and boot from the vdisk of mac os

2- (PREFERRED) put the clover/opencore efi folder in a qcow2 image (formatted as efi partition) and boot from there (there are ready to be used images and macinabox provides one). By this way the bootloader image will remain intact after upgrades.

So this seems to be really kicking my but and nothing I try works.  As I posted earlier I managed (I think) to passthrough my RX 560 to my Mojave Macinabox but there was no graphics line in About this Mac.  Should it definitely show up there?  Also performance was still very laggy.

I then removed that VM and disks and installed Catalina.  Boots fine with VNC but I can't get it to boot with my graphics card passed through.

Is it definitely true that you need a GPU to get usable performance (just general desktop usage. no gaming) from a Mac VM?  I will not be connecting KVM directly to machine and will only be accessing through VNC client.

i would really love to get this working but I just keep failing.

Here's my Catalina XML with the GPU passed through that is not working:

I am currently in the process of getting things to work and I noticed that my link speed is 1.5 - This Vm is all installed on my SATA3 SSD so I am not sure why this is happening. Any thoughts?

I am currently in the process of getting things to work and I noticed that my link speed is 1.5 - This Vm is all installed on my SATA3 SSD so I am not sure why this is happening. Any thoughts?

I'm not 100% sure but at the time of writing even qemu 5.0 can at least have an emulated sata link speed of max 1,5Gbit/s.

If you want to go faster you could try virtio or try passing through the sata controller too (a separate one).

Thanks SpaceInvader!

I started over, followed those^ instructions, and got a working 2-core VM with passthrough. The key issue was just installing the nvidia drivers remotely when the screen was garbled.

THEN I went and tried to change the # of cores in the VM (and made all the right edits to the XML again) and somehow this resulted in the VM not outputting to the display. It boots with a black monitor at 1280x1024 resolution. I can Splashtop in and use the VM no problem, but it won't even show me the full 2560x1440 resolution option in osx preferences. Any thoughts?

Here is what I see in display preferences:

I'm having the exact same issue with my High Sierra installation with a GTX970.

Anyone know how to fix this?

So this seems to be really kicking my but and nothing I try works.  As I posted earlier I managed (I think) to passthrough my RX 560 to my Mojave Macinabox but there was no graphics line in About this Mac.  Should it definitely show up there?  Also performance was still very laggy.

Is it definitely true that you need a GPU to get usable performance (just general desktop usage. no gaming) from a Mac VM?  I will not be connecting KVM directly to machine and will only be accessing through VNC client.

Can anyone

 answer these questions?
