multifunction should be on, the sound card should be function 1 and all slots and busses should be the same

Thanks,  had it that way but reverted at some point obviously. Put it back. Still the same.

Trying the latest version of OC from here: https://github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Opencore

A little better, I see a boot screen again now - select MacOS disc and it just freezes my server instantly and sticks on the Apple logo with an empty progress bar.

Thanks for the tip! Though looking at the page, it seems RX550 is actually not supported as well? https://dortania.github.io/GPU-Buyers-Guide/modern-gpus/amd-gpu.html#lexa-series (they list the whole Lexa series as unsupported). Did you mean RX5500?

Hmmm, looks like the site is slightly out of date. My understanding is that initially the RX550 came with the Lexa (2017) core but it was switched to the Baffin core almost immediately (2018 and on).

Looking at my system device information shows the following;

[1002:67ff] 10:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Baffin [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560/560X] (rev ff)
[1002:aae0] 10:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Baffin HDMI/DP Audio [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560/560X]

And as you can see, it is correctly identified below;

1233030600_ScreenShot2020-11-02at12_04_47pm.png.1e3689636cb28589c884e7364f06e4fa.png

And in the system report it shows with the Baffin 0x67ff code.

Chipset Model:	Radeon RX 550
  Type:	GPU
  Bus:	PCIe
  PCIe Lane Width:	x8
  VRAM (Total):	4 GB
  Vendor:	AMD (0x1002)
  Device ID:	0x67ff
  Revision ID:	0x00ff
Metal:	Supported, feature set macOS GPUFamily2 v1

I doubt you would find any RX550s being sold today with the old Lexa core.
My card is a Yeston which is advertised as Polaris 11. http://www.yeston.net/product/details/234/272
Polaris 10 or 20 = Ellesmere
Polaris 11 or 21 = Baffin
Polaris 12 = Lexa

Hope this helps.

Update:
I've submitted an issue report to Dortania with more details including a list of RX550 cards that are documented as having the compatible Baffin core. See https://github.com/dortania/bugtracker/issues/129

@mSedek Thanks, I've been able to boot and to install Catalina on vdisk. it works perfect with VNC.

I've also updated xml to use more cores, more memory, adding USB stuff and trying to passthrough my GPU.

It starts well on my hdmi screen but it stuck to boot screen.

No mouse or keyboard is active.

Here comes my xml to spot anything wrong :

Asus GTX1070 Strix 8 Go. I precise that I downloaded *.rom, added to xml, but it doesn't boot at all (black screen). So, I removed it.

That GPU is not supported unfortunately, so you need another GPU if you wanna have one dedicated to MacOS.

thanks. Is there any list of compatible GPU hardware? :)

Thanks for the help you provided, I appreciate.

Long story short, get RX 470/480/570/580 for OTB compatibility and decent performance from sierra upto latest or navi 10 from Catalina and up

This is the offical GPU support documentation.

The only issue I am aware of, is that it says the RX550 isn't supported but most do work. See my earlier post.

Does anyone have a similar setup to this and would be willing to post their EFI folder for me to try before I pull what's left of my hair out?! :)

CPU: Intel i9-10940X

Motherboard: ASUS X299 TUF MK2

GPU: MSI 5700XT MECH OC

Assuming nothing else really matters for now with regards to the build, as it can be tweaked later.

I can install Catalina perfectly, whilst still using VNC graphics, works fine.  Can also swap between Clover (default from install) and OpenCore with no issues, BUT...only when I remain with VNC graphics.

As soon as I swap to passthrough the GPU, that is when the issues start, simply does not boot.

I have tried:

* Passing through my own BIOS file

* Passing through other BIOS files from techpowerup (including different brand just in case that helped..)

* Not passing through any BIOS

* Passing through with/without the sound part of the GPU

The 5700XT is removed from UNRAID by stubbing it.

I also have an NVIDIA 1650 in the system which UNRAID can use for itself once I've made the 5700XT unavailable.

Yes it is possible, just change the path to the vdisk for the path to your unasigned drive thats it.

Thanks to @cat2devnull, I noticed that my GTX1070 is compatible with High Sierra. So I tried with this older version !

I've been able to see my passthroughed SSD disk (dev/disk/by-id/ata-Samsung_SSD_840_PRO_Series_S1ATNSAD774980B) at the boot installation. But I have not be able to erase it with disk utilities building GUID Partition. So, I'm stuck because installation can't be done using this disk.

Do you think that there is a way to do it?

Presently, I'm installing it on this same disk, but not passthroughed (mnt/disks/Samsung_SSD_840_PRO_Series_S1ATNSAD774980B). Less performance, but I move forward..

EDIT : installation done. It boots at clover, USB wireless keyboard works, choose Boot macOS from HighSierra, apple logo appears, and restart again and again.. (don't boot at clover using rom file / black screen)

Hello,

if i install a version of macos with this tool will i be able to update it in the future ?

I'm wondering if i should wait for Big Sur or if i can start now...

Thanks.

You can Always backup your vm, upgrade and if it crashes, just restore your backup lol..

Even in baremetal is Better to wait for upgrade confirmation by experts.

Anyways, you should start the process asap to get use to it and the possible issues you may find

Thanks, i was worried there might be something in the Macinabox magic that would prevent it.

Hi guys,

I'm quite new to unraid but I got a Catalina VM and a Windows VM up and running. My current setup:

  • AMD Ryzen 3900x
  • Aorus X570 Pro
  • 32gb ddr4
  • 1tb m.2 ssd
  • RX580 Nitro+ 4GB (MacOS)
  • RTX 2080 Super (Windows)

I got two working Windows VM's one with the AMD card passthrough and another with the NVIDIA card. The NVIDIA card is my primary GPU, AMD is the secondary. I installed a MacOS VM with VNC and got it to run with 12cores and 16gb of RAM, now I wanted to passthrough the GPU but I'm running into issues. I tried using SpaceInvaders advanced GPU passthrough tutorial, but it's not working yet. The ultimate goal is to be able to run MacOS or Windows, or both simultaneously by changing the core and ram amounts. Many thanks in advance.

Could someone explain what I'm doing wrong or where to look to resolve this issue. The passthrough of this card works fine with the Windows VM so the reset bug wouldn't make sense right?

Mm I havent ever managed to passthrough amd cards with clover, go for the opencore kvm amd try again

In the other hands, besides you need to change the OS tag to work with your native ovmf files for opencore , I dont see anything wrong

Is there a way to use opencore KVM with macinabox, or would you know a good tutorial that I could use as a starting point? Eager to learn and try. Thanks for the support already.

Google opencore kvm, lyonzen github, download the efi folder, Mount your OS efi partition paste the efi folder there, download opencore configurator, Edit config.plist and change the smbios to get the 1.1 imac pro 2017 save and reboot still in vnc, if everything is good, you should see improved resolution, after that passthrough your card

Dont forget to copy the xml OS tag from for exsmple your windows vm

Here is a post where I walked through the basics of building a Mac VM. It might give you some pointers.
