General advice of things to try;

- With/without the VBIOS

- With/without stubbing the card

- Ensure you're passing the video & audio component of the card together

- Check the Unraid server logs

- Check the VM logs

It's unusual to need ACS override on any modern motherboard. I would try updating the BIOS first.

I was able to get it working by simply switching the HD7770 to another PCIE slot and passthrough is now working fine!

Hi,

I have followed the instructions of Spaceinvaders video and just installed a Mac OS Monterey VM (was automatically downloaded when selecting "Big Sur"). After copying the files from the EFI partition to the disk image, deleting the first two drives from the template, ran the helper script with the modifications, the VM is running in a kernel panic or something like that (see screenshot).

Everything else remain untouched from the XML, so no further adjustments were made. Any ideas?

Edit: And yes, if I add the Opencore image once again, it is working fine.

I have Ryzen 9 5900X and Asus tuf gaming wifi x570 I have tried a lot of things but I always get the panic loop launching the recovery or installer. I even created a bootable usb stick from my other hackintosh and I get the same problem.

I always get this problem with the default created xml VM without any changes. Any changes I make after that won't solve the problem even after running the helper script.

I tried following exactly the video tutorial and I get the panic loop.

I tried replacing opencore with the one from this pull request but I got the panic loop.

https://github.com/SpaceinvaderOne/Macinabox/pull/49

I tried the new unraid.sh from the same pull request but got the same problem.

I tried the way mentioned in the post below but I got the same problem when I launched the recovery disk.

I managed to grab a screenshot before the panic, posted below.

edit

——

i am using unraid 6.10 rc2 which might be the problem

Thank you for advance.

The problem in the last post was resolved when I reverted unraid to 6.9.2

I passed through my NVME and installed MAC successfully on it.

I fixed the opencore config with smbios

I fixed the EFI folder on the NVME, and I booted from the NVME without a problem.

Everything works greatly until I passthrough the GPU. Then my nvme disappears from the boot devices. The display on GPU is correct, so the GPU is passed correctly, but opencore just can't find the NVME.

I think this is something with the xml but I am not sure how to fix it.

Bus 0x05 is my vga and audio. Bus 0x04 is the nvme

Made sure to check the box that says add to config and set to iMacPro1,1 in OC configurator, and now working!

Don't forget that any devices not on bus 0x00 will be considered 'external'. The video card should be external (as though it is plugged into a PCIe slot) but the NVME drive should be internal otherwise the machine thinks you're booting off an external drive. You can override this in the OC config but it is easier just to fix the VM xml.

Made sure to check the box that says add to config and set to iMacPro1,1 in OC configurator, and now working!

As always, be very careful using OC configurator. It is very version dependent and can break your system as easily as fix it. You would be much better off just using an XML aware editor or ProperTree.

The problem in the last post was resolved when I reverted unraid to 6.9.2

You should be able to get your VM to work under Unraid 6.10
The change in linux kernel sometimes causes weird things to break.

When I went from 6.8 to 6.9 I needed to load a ROM for my video card.
When I went from 6.9 to 6.10 I needed to stub my video card.

Both times I was able to identify the issue because when I tried to start the VM it spat mountains of PCIe bus errors.

Once you have everything working nice and stable, give it another go.

With the help of some great info in this thread I've finally got a BigSur vm working nearly correctly.

I have gpu passthough working with my GT 710 and successfully copied to and booted off the efi partition, but have been unable to work out how to get audio working.

I've changed the XML to make sure the audio is on the same bus, but not sure where to go from here. Can anyone offer any help or point me in the right direction?

Removed my old Macinabox (the old script from a year+ ago) and tried this one.

Yes, I deleted everything but I am now screwed with this new way of installing MIB.

I am getting this error.

Script location: /tmp/user.scripts/tmpScripts/1_macinabox_helper/script
Note that closing this window will abort the execution of this script
error: Failed to open file '/mnt/user/appdata/macinabox/autoinstall/Macinabox*.xml': No such file or directory

VM is now installed. Goto VM tab to run
Rerun this script if you make any changes to the macOS VM using the Unraid VM manger

Of course if I try to start the VM, I get an error.

Anyone have any pointers? Help.

Hi, which audio?hdmi/dp or onboard audio?

For onboard audio:

1. you need lilu + applealc kexts and you need to find your layout id depending on the codec, to be injected as a boot argument or with DeviceProperties

2. you need to put your onboard audio on bus 0x00

In ioregistry explorer audio will result as HDEF

For hdmi/dp audio:

1. with nvidia you need lilu + applealc, since applealc will patch the nvidia controller for the digital audio too

2. you need to put the audio part in the same bus as the video in a multifunction device

May sound "stupid" but check that:

a. the hdmi output device (monitor, tv, etc) has builtin speakers, or attach speakers to it (if the device has the aux port)

b. check the audio volume (ON THE OUTPUT DEVICE): you won't be able to change the audio volume from within mac os, unless you use a third party app like "sound control" --> that's how hdmi audio works in general

In ioregistry explorer hdmi audio will result as HDAU

Thanks for the reply! It was actually your PR and instructions that got me this far, so thank you.

It's for the hdmi audio. I have changed the bus so they are both the same.

I tried to work out the layout Id, but followed this link and it's listed under a different section (first one in this list): https://github.com/acidanthera/AppleALC/wiki/Supported-codecs#controllers-patches

I have lilu and applealc working (I think) after I adjusted the bus.

Didn't know about the volume thing - will look in to that app. I have speakers attached to the monitor.

You don't need any layout-id for digital (hdmi) audio, layout id is only for onboard audio. Applealc is needed only to patch the name of the nvidia controller (the link you posted). Applealc is just loaded and automatically patches the name of the controller --> it renames 'NVDA'.

Check the volume on the monitor, if it doesn't work attach a copy of your ioreg file, unraid diadgnostics file and upload your efi folder somewhere and share the link in private.

hello everyone my VM on big sur working great except for the sound i don't have any sound. i already try multifontion on but i thing i didn't find the good bus for the audio. Sorry again for wasting your time but i already try every day off from my job and that drive me crazy.

I would like to thanks @ghost82 for his time ! i always check your PR ( i have latest opencore and kext 😉 ) and message in this sub and on the github project. So thanks again for you work and time. People doesn't realise many dev works for free for us !

i use DP for video and audio on a RX580 my cpu is 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-11600K @ 3.90GHz

If you have any idea for the best smbios for my config in opencore configurator please :)

If you have any idea for the best smbios for my config in opencore configurator please

The best smbios you can choose is imacpro 1,1 which is default in macinabox.

You don't have the gpu as multifunction, I also changed and optimized some things in the xml.

Make sure you use your dumped vbios (rx5802.rom) and not a downlaoded one.

For hdmi/dp audio also check this:

Quote

Replace the whole xml with this, replace the oskey at the end of the xml for the ************* string:

@ghost82 sorry for wasting your time i just make a fresh install with boot directly on macos with the correct EFI mounted on the good partition and deleted other .img

i make the change with multifonction and putting on the same bus. But in MacOS i still haven't any output at all in the setting it's just empty.

Could you check my new XML and told me what's wrong please ?

Sorry again :(

You enabled multifunction in your snippet of code on the video portion, and that's ok, but the audio part was on a different bus.

In a multifunction device you have the different pieces belonging to the multifunction device in the same bus, same slot, but different function.

You can see inside the <source> the address of the gpu in the host system (unraid):

video part is at 04:00.0 (bus 4, slot 0, function 0)

audio part is at 04:00.1 (bus 4, slot 0, function 1)

Every recent gpu is a multifunction device.

<address> lines outside <source> are the addresses in the virtual machine, in this case mac os will see gpu at:

video part is at 04:00.0 (bus 4, slot 0, function 0)

audio part is at 05:00.0 (bus 5, slot 0, function 0) <-- WRONG, this was your code --> modifided to audio part is at 04:00.1 (bus 4, slot 0, function 1)
