I currently have a 2 SSD cache, 5 HDD array running unraid. I have my plex transcoding as well as NVR also writing to my cache drive along with VMs etc. I have a new SSD I want to add, and am wondering the best approach. Should i setup the drive in unassigned devices, and point a new variable to both plex and zoneminder to use this drive, or would it be easier to just add the drive to the array so that there is parity on it and select only those 2 shares to have access to the drive?

Adding the SSD to the array is likely to be a waste as write performance will be severely limited by the need to also write to the parity HDD for all write operations.

 

if you want resilience add it to the cache or else use it as an Unassigned Device.
