Can I use the primary (and only) GPU in Plex?

Featured Replies

Im going to be upgrading my server soon to a Ryzen 2600. The 2600 has no integrated GPU like my current 4790S does.

Will this cause issues with passing through my 1050 to my Plex docker? I do not plan on passing this GPU through to a VM, I just want to use the unraid nvidia build and pass it to my Plex container for transcoding.

Will I need to do anything special or will it just work?

It should work fine.

Awesome.

i wanted to make sure before I ordered anything. I didn’t want to end up with a nasty surprise.

You'll need a Linux driver for the card. There's a special plugin that can provide that by replacing the main Unraid system files on your boot flash. I'm not sure the GTX 1050 does what you want though. I think, though I could be wrong, that at least a 1050Ti is needed by Plex. If I find out more, I'll update.

EDIT: According to this, it seems your 1050 is ok: https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix

Added link, 1050 is ok

2 streams maximum on consumer cards though.

Oh I know about the limit and how to install the unraid nvidia build. I’ve been using the 1050 on my current system for several months now.

my concern was that my current system has an iGPU that unraid can use to boot, and the Ryzen 2600 does not, meaning the 1050 will end up being the primary GPU when I upgrade, instead of the secondary like it is now.

I wanted to make sure that Plex can still utilize it after the upgrade considering it will now be the only GPU in the system.

As far as containers are concerned it's a shared resource. It isn't the same as passing it through to a VM, where you have to jump through a hoop or two when it's your only GPU.

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks for that.

Out of curiosity if I'm using the GPU in Plex, will I still be able to connect a monitor and see the unRAID terminal? <Not necessary, just curious.

Yes.
