WD Shucked drives keep failing

Featured Replies

Hello fellow unRAID'ers!

So back in June I bit the bullet and got myself 2 WD mybooks 8TB and they we're the white label drives running the WD Red firmware.

Shucked and Chucked them in my server and they ran fine for about 3 months then one kept failing.

I would take it out the array to run a pre clear, It would pass so I just kept putting it back into the array.

Eventually gave up and did an RMA.

New drive arrived last week and after 3 Pre Clear runs it was good to put in.

2 days of use it started to fail and my other Shucked drive as well.

I am out of ideas now!

Currently I also have a problem with a WD Yellow 6 TB Enterprise drive that passed Pre Clear but fails on the array that one is SDE but my 2 problem Shucked drives are Disk 3 which is missing but is in unassigned drives under SDO and then disk 8 which is SDP.

I have also moved both these disk from my Dell h310 to the onboard Sata ports same result.

Diagnostics attached.

I am doing to take both drives out tonight and test in my Windows PC.

Setup.

This looks like a connection (or controller) problem affecting these 2 SATA ports:

The two WD80EZAZ are using those ports, swap them around to another controller, e.g., the LSI, also make sure the SATA power cables don't have any 3.3v signal.

Thanks for the reply @johnnie.black.

I have now taken the drives out and put them into my IcyDock 5.25to3.5" bay.

Both currently doing a 7 pass Preclear.

Will report on progress.

Just for context the drive power on hours.

WDC WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0 - 3m, 29d, 23h

WDC WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0 - 9d, 4h

So i know the drives are good and the S.M.A.R.T report is also good.

7 passes? That's 168 TB of reads and writes each. It seems a little excessive. They'll be worn out before they enter useful service!

Finished 1 pass on each disk all good as expected.

Added both back in the array the parity Sync finished this morning as I set off to work.

If this goes past 3-4 days the issue will be resolved.

Will keep this post active for another week

This can be marked as resolved the 2 WD 8TB Shucked drives in my ICYBOX are now running without fault.

Server has been up for 6 days without a problem.
