Disk errors - need advice

Featured Replies

I have a drive that is reporting the following:

187- Reported Uncorrect 8
197 Current pending sector 8
198 Offline Uncorrectable 8

I just did one pass preclear, and everything was successful? What does this mean? Are those reported errors a lie? Is the disk really OK?

Sometime disks report fake positives, especially WDs, if the preclear read test was successful the disk should be OK, you can also run an extended SMART test to confirm.

The drive in question is a Seagate 8TB SMR drive, I have quite a few of them that are the same age as this drive and have had zero issues with any of them which is why I am suspicious and I am running the pre clear. I replaced this drive in one of my servers and an it is now in an external enclosure connected to one of my other servers. I believe I did run an extended SMART test when it was still part of the array and it failed.

Run another one, if still fails the disk needs replacing.

So even if the pre clear passes, trust the extended SMART test?

  • Community Expert

Yes, if the SMART test fails disk the disk has bad sectors.

It completed without errors, so I guess the disk is OK.

Yes, at least for now, keep monitoring since once there are errors yor're more likely to get more in the near future.
