November 19, 201015 yr Well we were all wondering how low a 2TB drive would go... This is really low for an external. I'm thinking you could just open up the case use the drive (EARS?) and then use the external case for a smaller SATA drive... It seems odd that either drive is the same price, but I suppose some people want a smaller external drive (in terms of dimensions). You will most definitely have to be in line at 4am for this one. You won't be seeing me out there, but best of luck to those of you that want to brave it. http://www.black-friday.net/target-ad-scan.html page 2... flips
November 19, 201015 yr In the ad it looks like the 2TB version is twice the size of the 1TB version. Could be two 1TB drives in the 2TB version. Drive is near the bottom of page 2 of the ad.
November 19, 201015 yr Author They call the 1TB drive portable and the 2TB drive as desktop. I'm guessing that 1TB is a 2.5" and the 2Tb is a 3.5". Just a guess though...
November 19, 201015 yr In the ad it looks like the 2TB version is twice the size of the 1TB version. Could be two 1TB drives in the 2TB version. Drive is near the bottom of page 2 of the ad. the 2TB is the desktop version (requires an AC Adapter) where the 1TB looks like a portable one (only requires USB). However since there are no 1TB laptop drives, it's more than likely a 2 x 500 2.5in setup.
November 19, 201015 yr Author My guess it's these 2TB: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QEBMCI?ie=UTF8&tag=the05e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002QEBMCI Product Dimensions: 7 x 4.9 x 1.4 inches ; 2.2 p 1TB: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003B8PPEY?ie=UTF8&tag=the05e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003B8PPEY Product Dimensions: 5 x 3.1 x 0.6 inches ; 12 ounce So yeah it looks like two 500 gig in the 1TB, gotta think it's only one in the 2Tb though..
November 19, 201015 yr WD 1tb 2.5in drive: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=1tb+2.5+hard+drive&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=289225709827207535&ei=zPzlTJ7qC46-sAPW56yxCw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCUQ8wIwAA#ps-sellers
November 19, 201015 yr Based on this link there's a WD20EADS inside: http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=docs/Western%20Digital%20Elements%20External%20Hard%20Drive%20Disassembly I may have to get up for one of these.
November 20, 201015 yr Author This is in store only right? I doesn't say on the ad, but I'm sure it is. That article about what drive is in there also says that you can't put a different drive in there. that's kind of a bummer. WD must put in some protection against that. Not sure why they would care though...
November 20, 201015 yr I've already stalked my prey at our local Target. I checked SKUs, part #s etc., hopefully I didn't miss anything(like a new version that uses advanced format drive and/or a custom bios). They have 5(2TB) out on the shelf right now. I've already talked to the wife and we're good to go. Fortunately our Target is only 2 minutes from our house. We plan to just stay up... hit Target, get some breakfast, and then go home to sleep. We're both going in case of limits and to help increase our odds, just in case of one of us gets injured by the herd of sheeple. We don't normally go out on BF/Sat. but this seems like a good deal, unless an online store matches or comes close with a bare drive. I still can't believe I'm planning this. It's all UnRaid's fault. /justme
November 20, 201015 yr You know you can just buy the item now and then go to the store in the afternoon (or by 10 am depending on when the deal ends) after the crowds die down and go to the customer service desk and have them price adjust it.
November 20, 201015 yr Author I was thinking that same thing, but i thought they would do something to prevent that. not sure how they would though..
November 20, 201015 yr Keep in mind that these drives a PITA to remove... prepare for some bloody thumbs and excessive cursing..
November 21, 201015 yr I still can't believe I'm planning this. It's all UnRaid's fault. /justme It's called unRAID compulsive disorder. Soon you will be building unRAID servers in your sleep and seeing how to maximize idle hardware with unRAID.
November 21, 201015 yr It's called unRAID compulsive disorder. Soon you will be building unRAID servers in your sleep and seeing how to maximize idle hardware with unRAID. Okay, now you're scaring me.

November 21, 201015 yr Yeah, and I can easily see myself falling down that rabbit hole. That's why I'm scared. Someone hold me.
November 21, 201015 yr [evil voice] [evil laugh]MWAHHHHHH HAA HAAAA[/evil laugh] Join us on the dark side, the power is greater and less energy efficient [/evil voice] ... though the wallet has a tendency to feel lighter.
November 23, 201015 yr Keep in mind that these drives a PITA to remove... prepare for some bloody thumbs and excessive cursing.. Tru Dat!
November 23, 201015 yr What do you think taking one of these apart does to the warranty? This is definitly a good deal if you need an external drive. There have been recent examples of bare 2TB drives for $80 that are shipped direct to you home. After taking sales tax and gas into account how much are you really saving?
November 26, 201015 yr In my experience, three out of three have been EARS and not EADS. Someone over on the XBMC forums got a Caviar Black.
November 26, 201015 yr I think it is easiest to open these with two screw small flat head screw drivers opening it from the bottom side. Also, Target was giving out a 10 gift card for a $100 dollar purchase. If you have over $200, try to break the purchases up so you can get more gift cards if possible.
November 27, 201015 yr Just got two from Target this morning. Some have WD Black on these. The ones I got seems to match the one with WD Blacks inside them but I can't confirm until I open them.
November 28, 201015 yr Author one of the slickdeals threads had a link to softwre that you can use to check.
November 28, 201015 yr one of the slickdeals threads had a link to softwre that you can use to check. By plugging the drive into a computer and then looking in the device manager you can figure out which kind of drive you have. thought you guys might like this photo. Not me, but somebody bought 36 TBs worth...
