I am confused by reading contradicting info on host mappings being R/W or Slave R/W.

I tend to use the second, although I am not perfectly clear why I do it.

Also seems it is not the default in most container setups.

Shouldn't it?

    You need the Slave option when a mount point refers to an Unassigned Device.    Without it docker containers can only see paths that are mounted before Docker starts.
