What's not working on them?  Certainly looks like they are ( a driver is loaded )

04:00.0 USB controller [0c03]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VL805 USB 3.0 Host Controller [1106:3483] (rev 01)

Hi Squid... An external drive is not been seen in unassigned unless it's in the usb 3 port. It is a usb 3 drive.

Thanks

There's some issue with the USB3 controller:

Nov 21 20:49:37 tbmaindoma kernel: xhci_hcd 0000:03:00.0: HC died; cleaning up

You might try with IOMMU disabled if not needed, also look for a bios update.

So I upgraded to 6.8.0-RC7 which appears to have fixed the issue so far as the drive is mounting now. I'll be giving it a big run this week when I sort my backups.

Thanks for the feed back both.

Still problems with the USB controller, most VIA devices have been very problematic since I can remember, good news they are not used in any recent PCs, you're probably better off getting an addon (non VIA) UBS controller if you really need to use a USB disk.

So I tried using my PCI card and that failed too.

That said I'm guessing it has a VIA chip set from this log...

So a quick update... after a lot of faffing I have managed to upgrade the bios of my board & even tested using diffrent external disk cases with just the same result.

I probably will come back to this one day but for now I will leave the back ups on USB2 as they seem stable enough :)
