Virtualization failure

Featured Replies

Hi there,  I have been following the forums for 8 years but I don't think I have ever needed to ask a question since whatever I needed I always found by looking at previous answers. But now I'm stuck. I consolidated 2 machines into one, Windows and UNRAID, I would like to have one as the host and one as the guest, I prefer windows as the host because of comfort level with Windows, but if I can get decent performance with Windows 10 as a VM I'm good either way.

I can boot into Windows fine, and I can boot into unraid fine, but I cannot for the life of me run any virtual machines inside unraid, and unraid is not easy to run inside windows. I have the following hardware:

MB:      Asrok970m Pro3

CPU:   FX-6300

RAM:   4*8GB 9-9-9-24 (*DDR3)

HDD:   2 Seagate harddrives (4TB), 1 western digital harddrive (2TB)

Window is installed on an NVME Samsung 970 Pro 512GB, my motherboard doesn't have an M2 slot so the NVME is in  an adapter card

Video:  Zotac GT  1030

I tried to run unraid inside windows, but I can never get it to load properly, the boat always says that its "waiting for /dev/disk/by-label/UNRAID", shows a message about maybe the flash drive is not named UNRAID (but it is and it works fine if I boot it as the host), continues loading but gives an fatal about module bonding not found, continues but gives an ip address that is not reachable, I can still log in, and if I try the gui mode I will get to the gui but the server it self is not reachable.

When I try to run windows inside unraid, no matter which method I used, whether I try to do a fresh install  or if I try to follow spaceinvaders video about using the same bare metal windows install in the nvme  as the VM inside unraid. the moment I press start VM, the computer goes black until I do a hard shutdown. I tried just for kick s to add a ubuntu VM inside unraid, same thing, black screen and a hard reboot.

in my earlier attempts I could see the nvme inside unraid through unassigned devices, now its not there, yet if I look at system devices its there.

I know you need more info I just don't know what you would look for so please let me know. Please keep in mind although I have been using unraid for over 8 years I'm very much a novice, I used it for only shares for over 7 years, only in the past few months did I start adding plugins and dockers
