Migrating data from old to new unraid server

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm about to do a new unraid build (from the ground up) and will retire my old monster server.  But I'm wondering how I go about doing my data migration - I have one unraid licence key on a usb stick, which is naturally in my old server.  But I need to put this stick in my new server as the unraid O/S...

If I put this into the new server, how do I go about accessing the files on the existing server?  Do I need to use some kind of linux reader if the O/S is gone, or is there a really simple way of doing it?

Appreciate any pointers.

Thanks

Matt

Use a trial version of Unraid (Install that trial version on high quality flash drive as it could become your new boot drive) for the new server.  Copy the files over.

Then after everything is working, you have a decision to make.  You can move the .key file (In the config folder) to the new server and transfer your license to the new flash drive.  (This is now an automated process...) Or your can make a backup copy of the old flash drive.   Then copy the contents of the new flash drive to the old one. Run the makebootable routine.  Now copy the .key file from the backup of the old flash drive back to the old flash drive.

EDIT: Remember that flash drives do not last forever.  So transferring the license now could save you some hassle down the line.  Also make sure that you maintain a current backup of your flash drive!
