December 4, 20196 yr Hi There, I'm new to unraid. I have a computer with 10 drive bays. 4x 6tb drives (new) and a random assortment of 1tb+ other drives. One of the 6tb drives refuses to format, I have no idea why. Just is stuck there saying "Unmountable disk present: Disk 3 • ST6000DM003-2CY186_WCT1X3C2 (sdg)" Screenshot here: https://i.imgur.com/rJNvkE0.png diagnostics file attached. December 4, 20196 yr Community Expert Disk3 and to a lesser extent disk2 are suffering from apparent connection issues, start by replacing the cables.

I always recommend fewer larger disks instead of more smaller disks. More disks require more ports, more power, at some point more license, and most importantly, each additional disk is an additional point of failure. And larger disks perform better due to increased density. Haven't checked the SMART for each of those, but I suspect they are also old. Have you tested all of your disks? Every bit of every disk must be reliably read to reliably rebuild a disk. Don't install lots of disks just because you have them laying around. Only install what you need for capacity. It is easy to add disks later, or to replace a disk with a larger disk.

It's great I'm going to let the 6tb drives which are brand new, and the 3tb drive do their thing now, and it's syncing at 178mb/sec (much better than before, lol) once it's up, I'll add some more drives. Yes I tested them all, but i didn't "preclear" them, can't find the thing for that in the ui, must be a command-line thing? I definitely want to use all my drive bays, as that would be fun, and I think I'd like to add a second parity drive, at what point is that recommended? Thanks! tower-diagnostics-20191205-0048.zip

There was one bad drive (old 1.5tb that is probably a decade old, lol) and one bad cable connected to a 6tb... that cable was at least a decade old, rofl. Thanks, no more errors now I think.
December 5, 20196 yr Community Expert Do any of the disks show SMART warnings on the Dashboard? Be sure to setup Notifications to alert you immediately by email or other agent as soon as a problem is detected. Fix a problem as soon as it occurs so you don't wind up with multiple problems that are more difficult to recover from. And install Fix Common Problems plugin also.
