So I am using Rsync from a remote machine to back up a lot of data.  My second drive in my array is spun down and currently the array is writing to the third disk.  The issue is that none of the other disks are spun down.  Is that wrong?  Shouldn't all the other inactive drives be spun down?

How are your drives defined in the spin-up groups?

How are your drives connected?

I am 99% sure they are all defined the same.  Also I think disk 1 is in use but earlier today it was not and still not spun down?

If all your drives are in the same spin-up group, then if any of them are spun up, the rest in that group will be spun-up as well. Since "they are all defined the same", then they will all be spun-up.

 

 

I made the mistake of not disabling spin groups and could not understand why loads of my drives were not spinning down until Joe L. put me on the right track.

Check your settings.
