No Audio on Linux VM's

Recommended Posts

Hi I have been struggling and researching this issue on and off for a few months and haven't been able to find a solution.

There was a time when my various Linux VM's all had sound, and then they suddenly defaulted to the Dummy output. I don't know what changed that caused that. During this time, sound on my Win 10 VM using the same hardware continued to function properly.

The goal here is to get the sound output from my Radeon 7470 working again. Again it works fine in Win 10. I have 2 machines I've tried this on. I started with a Dell Precision T7500 worksation, and then migrated my server to a Dell Precision T5500 Workstation with identical results. I've tried 5 different video cards (3 AMD and 2 Nvidia) both machines I've tried using the on-board sound and multiple Linux distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Solus, openSuse and Fedora) but still no sound in any Linux. I've deleted VM's and started from scratch, and I've toggled on and off the ROM's associated with their respective GPU's to no avail.

Clearly there is some sort of configuration issue somewhere, as it worked before and continues to work with Win 10 VM's. I created new VM's with the same configuration I always have... And now I'm at a loss at how to proceed.  Seems like sound in Linux regardless of distro or hardware randomly stopped working. Any help would be appreciated.

If I'm understanding correctly you need graphic card audio to work..Let's see if the "mac os fix" works under linux: try to change the bus of your graphic audio to be the same as your graphic card, same slot too, but different function, like this:

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <rom file='/mnt/cache/isos/Dell.HD7470.1024.120408.rom'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>
    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
    </hostdev>

Let us know if it works.
