November 24, 201015 yr Looks fine to me. The only issue I see with the replacement motherboard (and this is pretty minor) is that you'll max out at 14 drives instead of 16 if you ever choose to expand in the future since this board has no PCI x1 slot. If you plan on sticking with a 5 drive server (or anything 14 drives or fewer), then I see no problems whatsoever. As long as you can live with that, then I say go for it. This should be a nice, straight-forward build.
November 24, 201015 yr Author This should be a nice, straight-forward build. Thanks for your advice ! I'll add the mobo to the supported list if all goes well.
November 24, 201015 yr Author Great, please do. Here's how to test it. Thanks. I'll follow the directions. I am going to try 3 hard drives: Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green Hard Drive - 1.5TB, 3.5", SATA-3G Model: WD15EARS Price: $69.97 Tigerdirect.ca
November 25, 201015 yr That's fine. Remember to install jumpers on pins 7-8 of those drives and all WD EARS drives BEFORE installing them in your server or using them for any other purpose. I always install the jumpers immediately upon removing the drive from the packaging so that there's no chance I'll forget. I also recommend that you preclear the drives (again, after installing jumpers) especially if you are buying all three at once. This will help you figure out if any of these drives are prone to early death.
March 20, 201115 yr Author Easy. March 23, 201115 yr That all looks good to me. The Ultra case should work fine. You will have one unused 5.25" bay, so it may look a bit odd. You could throw in a single hot swap bay and use that one for your parity and then the 5 bays in the norco cage for your data drives...
