How much free space to leave?

Featured Replies

With traditional hard drives, it's good to leave about 10 percent free at the very least... What about on unRaid?  How much should be left on each HD? What about the total?

It is a journaling file-system.  I've heard you should probably leave space equal to the size of the largest file you store on the drive.

Excellent news! That means I have about 2TB more than I thought I did :)

LOL, I normally rip ISO's now and then, but decided I like the sounds of 20GB opposed to 8GB. I'm not sure why, but thats what I went with per disk. ;) Gives me a little float just in case I need to squeeze something in or just in case I decided to re-rip a video.

20 GB sounds about right.  So what do we input on that line?  20 GB, 20, 20000 ???

20971520 at least thats what I got should be 20GB

I think you are right, since the input field is in kilobytes (even though it is not labeled)

a web-page that helps to determine the correct (kb) value to put in the field here here:

I was just looking for the same thing, is it  20 GB, 20, 20000  etc...could something be added to the Un-Official UnRAID manual?  Use Kilobytes for the 'Min. free space:' field.

I suppose this could come back to bite me somewhere down the road but I use a fill em and forget em approach. These drives have been this way for over six months and have caused me no problems. The free space has not changed. Last number is the free space as displayed by the the unRAID main page. Most of these drives have multiple 40+ G ISOs on them.
