Help requested Copies to server fail

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Me and two other guys are running very similar setups and are all encountering the same issue.

Pro version with 10+ drives.

we have had this problem for a few months now and have serched the best we could for a solution to no avail.

We have no issues copying from the server, only to the server.

We have swapped routers, switches, network cables, sata leads and the like, we have failures with both teracopy and windows copy.

We are all running windows 7, different flavours from home premium to ultimate, OS's are legit.

When we try to copy to the server be it via the share or straight to the dis.

using terracopy the copy window will come up, then freeze, one of a few things will then happen:

The copy will stay frozen from anyware from 2-5 mins and then fail.

This may or may not write a 0kb file to the server.

The copy will stay frozen and then start copying when it gets to 100 it will fail.

This will write a properly sized file to the server but will be unplayable.

Repeating the copy will give a combination of these events and will eventually succeed.

Most of the time if a copy starts successfully, and we try to then browse the server, the copy will freeze and most likely fail.

While the copy is frozen the green bar in windows slowly tracks from left to right while this is occurring the server cannot be browsed and when it finishes the copy will either start or fail.

Error messages from terracopy are one of two.

"The file exists".

or

The network location has been lost (need to clarrify the exact wording on this one)

One note.

most of our drives are full with less than 5gig of space available.

We are using the most free setting in the share options.

One of the guys said he trasfered some data from disk to disk to free up some space on each disk and gave himself 50gig free on every disk and has not had a failure since.

Is there a mimimum amount of free space required on each disk, is this a bug or simply a coincidence?

Syslog attached.

It is not only that but the OP has a problems with one of the his HDs (identified as sdc, ata6 or md5). It may be benign and result of the "swapped routers, switches, network cables, sata leads and the like" that they did trying to pinpoint the problem or it may be falling.

And regarding the Teracopy  - make sure you download one of the more recent versions and not using the one you downloaded years ago (aka pre-Win7).

Complete hardware configuration may help too.

Sounds similar to this : http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7851

I never figured out my problems - just added a new drive.

I did see that post throughout my searches, but as our share allocation is set to "most free" files copied should be being dumped onto a near empty 2TB drive so one would think this would not be as issue.

Those errors have only popped up recently, issue has been ongoing for about 3 months.

Thanks for the input.

Once thing you can try (to help eliminate network issues) is to telnet into the server and try copying (cp) some files around the server.

I've been having these EXACT same issues while using 4.5.6! I use Teracopy & Win7. I never had problems with my older versions of Unraid, but this release seems to have some issues as more and more of these threads are appearing everyday. I've tried to capture the failure many times, but I just can't get it on the systemlog.

Note - I'm not even using the 'Most Free' method of copying, as I'm copying directly to the Drive share in hopes of eliminating any potential issues with the allocation method.

It seems Win7 is one of the things that is common on this server fail/freeze.

I've had this issue too, it is caused by a combination of large, green drives that are nearly full. Instead of a bug I simply think of it as a challenge. :)

To prevent this in the future, don't write to drives that are nearly full. Write instead to a drive with lots of space and then transfer them with midnight commander, rsync, cp command etc. I too jumped through lots of hoops when I first experienced this several months ago. Now I just work around it.

Hello, I am with Jimbo, and have this issue.

My 2tb drives had 125gig free space left on them, across 5 drives.

I threw in a new 2tb, copied the data across all drives to gain space on each drive and the server seemed to come good.

I've not had the copy since and from your posts it does look like you need a serious amount of free space...

My question is, Is this normal? having more than 125gig per drive so the server copies don't fail seems a bit much... Is it just the drives? (Samsung 2tb Green and WD 2tb Green)

No way...... If so this is a huge problem. I am trying to write to a 2tb that has 200gb free and it chokes up while writing. This is total crap if this is really the case!
