Help with chassis selection.

I have what I hoped was a simple question but I couldn't find anything directly related.

I'm looking at upgrading my setup from my old DS380 build into a rack mounted system for more options and centralizing my systems. I plan to do docker and VM hosting with multiple gpu passthrough for my main PC and and an HTPC. So I was hoping to have 2-3 GPU support.

I haven't purchased my hardware yet. However what I had originally settled on was a Supermicro 846 (SuperChassis 846E16-R1200B) chassis with a BPN-SAS2-846EL1 backplane. After doing some research though it seems getting the pci-e power connectors for this chassis will be difficult but doable with 8-pin and molex to pci-e adapters. Because of this I think an alternative might be to go with a standard ATX chassis like something from iStarUSA, rosewill or silverstone. Then afterward attaching a DS4243 to that. I know that both of these setups would require and HBA so I had intended on picking up either a 9211-8i or 9207-8e respectively. Budget wise from what I have priced out both designs will be pretty similar in initial cost. These will be going in a 24U rack with a single switch, AV receiver and HDMI switcher.

Since we have a lot of different ways people have done build outs I was hoping a few people would be willing to give their perspective and recommendations on these options. Or maybe something I'm missing.

Thanks in advance.
