Hello all

Here is my prob I am a newbe and searched the threads can seem to get my usb to boot my machine

I have tried the different formating tools i think after 3 days i have tried all the suggestions here.

I have found that i can boot to a dos prompt when i only format the usb making it bootable by using the hp formating tool it will boot the machine on the usb port to a dos prompt when i add the syslinux file and the unraid to the usb it will no longer boot get a msg "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device"

I had a friend that sugested that i format the drives and see if it would boot then.  I havent tried that yet hoping someone has experanced this and can give me some help

I have an Intel D845gvsr motherboard

intel celeron 2.66ghz processoer

buss speed 533 mhz

1 g memory

have xp currently loaded on the hard drive.

Thanks in advance

Scott

i have done all of the steps in the wiki serveral times along with all the other possible issues

Have you tried another USB drive in your machine?

Have you tried the existing USB drive in another machine?

i have tried other usb drives but dont have another computer to try it in.

I would suggest trying another usb stick. What brand is it? What I do:

Format with Windows 7 (FAT32 - 4k sectors)

Label the USB drive "UNRAID"

Do the syslinux thing (make sure you can see the hidden file it creates)

Copy over the unRAID download from LimeTech.

It sounds as though your problem is not with the motherboard but with the preparation of the drive.

You are missing

ldlinux.sys

It is the file loaded on the flash drive when you invoke "syslinux -ma X:"

(where X = the drive letter of  your flash drive when plugged into your windows PC)

The Command window you invoke it in must be "Run As Administrator" for it to write to the flash drive and create the ldlinux.sys file.

Without that step being correctly performed there is no way the flash drive will boot.  You will know it is done when the file exists on the flash drive.  It will be a hidden system file, so if using windows file explorer you'll need to set ti to show BOTH hidden and system files.

What do you mean exactly by will not boot?

What error are you getting?  Can you provide a screenshot?

is the label for the usb stick UNRAID   (all caps)

when you plug it into a Windows machine can you see the hidden system file named ldlinux.sys under  the /flash directory?

Joe.. your right that was a file i left off my list but it was on the drive thanks though

graywolf

1 & 2 when the computer comes up it is asking for a boot device but if i format the usb stick like a dos boot it comes up to a a: prompt so I think the motherboard should boot if i can get it all right

3. it is UNRAID all caps

4.  Yes I can even though i didnt list it in my earlier post

anyone got any more suggestions

Try using the utility listed in this post.  It may help you get everything set up.

I could not get my usb sticks to work when i formatted using win 7 but i could boot from an SD card that was formatted with win 7. The SD card was in a card reader connected to the usb port .(free unRAID)

Yet when i formatted the usb sticks with XP both sticks it worked fine. I tried formatting one of the sticks again with Win 7 and again the stick would not work... ???
