No way to tell from what you posted.

That is not the output from the preclear.  It does not include the full SMART output.

Try

smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdd

Selective self-test flags (0x0):

After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.

If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

There are three sectors pending re-allocation, and 23 reported uncorrectable events.  (sectors apparently identified in the initial pre-read phase, but NOT re-allocated in the zeroing, instead they were re-written in place)

To see more sectors pending re-allocation after a pre-clear is not a good sign.  IT would imply they were detected in the post-read phase.

I'd do another pre-clear pass to see it those 3 sectors are re-allocated.  If they are also not re-allocated but written in place I'd suspect either the drive or the power supply to the drive.

Since this is a new drive, it may stabilize, or not... another pre-clear pass or two will tell.

============================================================================

I agree.  It is still finding un-readable sectors.  It has not re-allocated any...  It seems to be re-writing them in place.

What kind of power supply are you using?  Are there splitters involved? Or a drive cage?  You might try a different power connector if you think it might be the power supply, but if not, it is likely to be the drive itself.

In any case, you now have the evidence needed to RMA the drive.

  • Author

I'm adding another drive to my main box, so yes there are splitters involved.

I've updated the firmware and replaced the SATA power wires, and will run another test.

thanks for the help!

  • Author

After another run with the above changes, i get the following. no new errors, the relocations were done.

Can anyone advise on the current values of 195 and 187? Are they ok for use, or reason to return the drive?

thanks,

John
