December 22, 20196 yr Hi everyone, I am currently trying to put together a system to run 2 Windows VMs but I have a small problem. Config: mobo: Asus Z10PA-D8 (with onboadr graphics!!) cpus: Xeon E5-2630 v3 memory: 64GB Samsung ECC graphics: MSI GTX 970 and Sapphire RX 470 When I plug my monitor to the mobos onboard graphics and then turn on the system everything is fine. I can normaly create VM with gpu passthrough or use existing one, shut it down and restart it no problem, everything seems to be ok. But when I leave a monitor plugged into the one of the dedicated GPUs at the point of starting the machine I can then no longer use that GPU for passthrough. It is possible to start VM in VNC mode but not with GPU passthrough, it just says Tiano Core a then it blanks. So to me it seems like the Unraid or the mobo can not "decide" which GPU to grab when booting to Unraid with monitor plugged into one of the dedicated GPUs. Have someone experienced this? Do you think it is a mobo PCI subsystem issue or some Unraid setting i dont know about? Thank you for every response.
December 22, 20196 yr Do you have an option in your bios to set the preferred system graphics? If yes, this should be set to IGD (Integrated), or similar. Otherwise, you might need to add a rom file for the GPU you are passing?
December 23, 20196 yr Author Yes, bios has that setting but changing it doesnt solve the issue. My mobo also has 3-pin header to physicaly disable onboard video but that doesnt help as well. In case I disable onboard video everything behaves the same as I described. I am trying GPU rom passing since yesterday unsuccessfuly so far.
December 27, 20196 yr Author OK so swichting boot mode to legacy instead of UEFI seems to be the trick, but further testing will follow.
December 5, 20205 yr Hi, Did you sort out the issues? I have a similar system to yours but I haven't been able to complete a Windows 10 VM. Hoping you can help, perhaps providing the bios settings you had to make and settings you did in the VM setup. Config: mobo: Asus Z10PA-D8 (with onboard graphics!!) cpus: Xeon E5-2660 v3 memory: 64GB Samsung ECC graphics: Gigabyte GTX 960 Unraid: 6.8.3 I have made a number of attempts to get a VM up and running, but the furthest I get is as follows: Installation starts, displaying via the graphics card. Windows installs without connections to the net. Once in windows I go to device manager: but although I have the rom (Gigabyte.GTX960.4096.150702.rom) for the graphics card, the card is not listed in device manager. I try updating the microsoft display driver, from the virtio-win-0.1.185.iso but it says latest driver already installed. So the Red Hat QXL won't install. There are then 3 other devices needing drivers - 2 update from virtio-win-0.1.185.iso but the third isn't recognised I then try and install the guest agent. I click on the file, but before the usual windows installing software animations appear the screen goes black. And no matter what I do I am unable to start it back up - always has a black screen. I notice from the logs: Dec 5 15:31:54 Cosmos kernel: vfio_ecap_init: 0000:02:00.0 hiding ecap 0x1e@0x258 Dec 5 15:31:54 Cosmos kernel: vfio_ecap_init: 0000:02:00.0 hiding ecap 0x19@0x900 Dec 5 15:31:54 Cosmos kernel: vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: BAR 1: can't reserve [mem 0xb0000000-0xbfffffff 64bit pref] Dec 5 15:31:55 Cosmos acpid: input device has been disconnected, fd 5 Dec 5 15:31:58 Cosmos kernel: vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: BAR 1: can't reserve [mem 0xb0000000-0xbfffffff 64bit pref] Dec 5 15:31:58 Cosmos kernel: vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: BAR 1: can't reserve [mem 0xb0000000-0xbfffffff 64bit pref] pci 0000:02 I think is my graphics card. Any help appreciated.
