More space used by XFS after an initial format.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I upgraded from 6.7 to 6.8 a few days ago. Under 6.7 I had 16 drives and all used 8.8GB after the initial format. After I upgraded to 6.8 and added 4 extra drives they all use 56.6GB after the initial format.

It is not like it is a problem, but I am a bit curious why that is - is there anybody with an explanation?

It is probably because XFS has relatively recently been upgrade to support more features going forward.

Finally someone else with the same issue as me. I thought I was going crazy. Anyway, this should really be stickied somewhere so that people don't get so confused.

From Googling a bunch, I found that this should be expected. Take a look at the following links:

https://forums.unraid.net/bug-reports/prereleases/unable-to-format-new-drives-system-locks-up-rc5-r732/page/2/?tab=comments#comment-7205&searchlight=1

Essentially, now formating with XFS has reflink=1 and crc=1. With reflink=1, the space used is no longer about 1GB per TB, but rather about 0.5% of your total space.
