December 2, 201015 yr Hey everyone, I have been doing some research on building a unraid server on and off for a few months now, and I just happened onto an older server box, it has no hard drives. I haven't done full research on the hardware in it but just had a quick question about one thing. It has 4 on board sata ports and an additional PCIE sata card with 4 sata ports, lets assume that that add on card is just a sata controller and not a RAID controller, I should in theory have a maximum of 8 drives correct? Also for a little more clarity does all of the drives have to be on the same controller, or can you mix onboard and a PCIE controller card? Thanks for your help.

They can be on any controller. They can be a mix of SATA and IDE drives. The only criteria is that the chipset of the SATA controllers have a driver present in unRAID. The only way you'll know for sure is to boot up a copy of unRAID. If it sees the disks, you in good shape. (You do not even need to assign them to the array, but id they are available for assignment, it sees them and supports the SATA controllers.)
