December 3, 201015 yr Hello, I recently moved my server, when I booted it up my disk 5 was not found in the array. I didn't even realize this until a couple of days later. running unraid 4.5.6. So I powered the system down, checked all the cables. When I started the system up, it detected my disk 5. But the question is, to bring the array online it asks: Start will bring the array on-line, start Data-Rebuild, and then expand the file system (if possible). I'm sure I want to do this does it have to rebuild the data? Shouldn't it just have to rebuild the parity across the drives if some data on the other drives changed? The reason I'm asking is that I've never had to change a disk before, and didn't really change anything in this case, but will this potentially cause any data loss? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks
December 3, 201015 yr Yes it does need to re-construct the drive. It was taken off-line when a write to it failed. The only way to get the correct data and not have possible file or file-system corruption, especially if it has been several days, is for you to re-construct the drive. If you were to attempt to force a disk online you risk corruption and loss of anything written to the drive since it failed. Basically, you need to press "Start" and let the re-construction begin. December 3, 201015 yr Author Great thanks! I was also using unMenu to get more details, it was showing as a "New" drive, and the Model / Serial # of the drive is not showing up properly in the display. Also ran a smart test and the report doesn't show any errors. So this is what also had me confused. I'll bring it online and keep my eye on it. Thanks!
