@showstopper I'm not sure if this is the best approach, but I run two instances (docker containers) of SWAG (formerly letsencrypt).  One for internal network redirection and one for externally accessible network redirection.  Essentially one instance per each network it would be mapped to for redirection within that network.  This doesn't solve an issue you encountered, but it would potentially mitigate the damage of changes made to that one network alone if you were making some experimental changes that could break other configs.
