December 4, 201015 yr Well, they're here. Seagate, perhaps inadvertently, has been hinting at a new generation of "green" drives on their website, by listing "some" of their LP drives as having 64MB cache. Now it's all out in the open: 64MB cache 5900rpm spin rate 4KB sectors SATA 6.0 Gbps 1.5TB and 2TB sizes I expect these will be even more efficient and speedy than the current 2TB LP, which is already very good in that regard. These will likely have areal densities in line with the 3TB drive which is surely just around the corner for Seagate. Only time will tell how compatible these will be with unRAID out of the box, given the 4KB sectors. http://www.tcmagazine.com/tcm/news/hardware/32140/seagate-introduces-barracuda-green-sata-60-gbps-hard-drives

December 5, 201015 yr I would be interested to see if the extra cache boosts performance. I remember when WD released the advanced format drives with the extra cache, it didn't show that much of a boost. I think with the 4K sectors require the use of a larger cache to compensate. It will be interesting if/when? the 3.5" drives start using the hybrid technology like the momentus XT drives.

SmartAlign Described here: http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/whitepaper/mb604_4k_transition_faq.pdf (Actually it is a 2 page white-paper that says absolutely nothing about how SmartAlign works, other than "marketing" tells us that mis-alignment will not affect performance.) Got to love the marketing group... I used to do marketing support for a fortune 500 company IT division.. One of our favorite sayings to marketing went something like this: "You told the customer it would do what?" Marketing... SmartAlign. Argh..... Joe L.

It's not impossible. Consider they have a winner with the momentus XT drives monitoring the LBA's and making determinations on putting them into a read/cache SSD to speed things along.
