January 28, 20206 yr hey guys i have 4 4tb drives right now. I just bought 2 8tb drives. What is the most efficient way to do the switch after i preclear the 8tb drives? I will be taking the 4tb drives out to use in a backup Freenas server.
January 28, 20206 yr If you have a parity drive then replace it with 8TB drive and rebuild parity then replace one data drive at a time to rebuild the drive then the next one if all went well with out any errors or problems.
January 28, 20206 yr Author I have a 10tb and an 8tb parity drive already, was just trying to replace the 4tb data drives.

Shut down server, replace one 4TB data drive, start server, stop array, assign new 8TB drive to missing 4TB drive location, start array and let new 8TB drive rebuild and if there is no errors or problems then do same for the second 8TB drive. January 28, 20206 yr Author i only have 2 8tb to replace 4 4tb drives, will that still work? do i have to rebuild parity like 4 times? it takes about 20 hours per time.
January 28, 20206 yr OIC you are moving all 4 of the 4TB drives and replacing with just the 2 8TB drives.

January 28, 20206 yr Start by replacing one smaller data drive with the 8tb. https://wiki.unraid.net/Replacing_a_Data_Drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcD5svP7Uog Once that step is complete you can then check out the unbalance plugin to migrate data off the drives you are removing. There is a great video on how to do that (@14:00 minute mark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz4-YlH1lTk Once that is done, you can shrink your array. https://wiki.unraid.net/Shrink_array Edited January 28, 20206 yr by jpowell8672
January 28, 20206 yr There is also the binhex-krusader docker which you can use to move data manually if preferred.
