January 31, 20206 yr I'd like to build a new machine. One VM would be OPNsense, as my 24/7 firewall. I have a 10 GBit/s fiber connection. Are there any NICs that are known to work well, maybe even passed-through to the VM? Or particular NICs that are known to cause problems? Thank you very much in advance!

I have personal preference of Intel 10gbe nics as they usually support individual stubbing of each port. For example on my unraid rig I am planning to do an OPNSense VM as well. I have a dual port 10gbe Intel x540 (if memory serves) and each port has it's own IOMMU group. That means I can technically have one go to OPNSense and one go to Unraid if I wanted to.
