February 1, 20206 yr I have an older machine that I would like to upgrade. I have little memory how I even built the thing back in 2010 but wonder if I can add hardware to get it running 2020 style. MB - ECS A885GM-A2 Version 1.0 CPU - AMD Sempron 145 @ 2800 Mhz Power Supply TX 750 Any suggestions? Can I simply upgrade the CPU? Thanks.
February 1, 20206 yr That is a pretty old board/CPU, you could look into whether or not it can take a more powerful processor but given it's age, you are probably better off replacing them both with something newer.
February 2, 20206 yr Agreed - It's an AM3 socketed board, but the manufacturer's list for supported CPUs stops at 6-core Phenom II. So unless you can pick up a very cheap secondhand processor I would say you've already had your money's worth out of that board and it's probably time to move on. And even if you did get it running with a replaced CPU, it's going to be quite power hungry compared to a more modern build.
