Start Over?

I have my unRAID server setup with disks, but I think I may have hosed some of the configuration up.  I can see the user shares from other devices (WD TV Live Plus, Mac Mini), but I can't play any of the media files.  On the WD TV Live Plus, it just hangs.  On the Mac Mini, it will crash the app trying to play the file (VLC, QuickTime,  etc)

So, can I just start over?  I have 4 disks in my array (3 data, 1 parity) so I don't want to lose my data.  Can I just reinstall the unRAID software to my flash drive and recopy my key file and boot up with a fresh install?  If I attach the drives in the right order, will it recognize the array?

Any help is much appreciated.

thanks

Yes you can....  You'll need to assign the drives on the "devices" page (just get the parity drive in the right place the others don't matter as much) and you'll need to do an initial parity calculation.

Well, that didnt work :(  I am seeing really bizzar behavior.

I setup a SMB user share called 'Media' with export-read-write permissions. I can connect to the share from my Mac just fine.  When I try to play a video file on the share using VLC, it crashes VLC.  I tried using QuickTime, and it reports back that it is not a valid movie file.

I tried to copy a file from the share to my Mac, and it won't paste the file.  I don't get any kind of error, just doesn't run.

I can see the share from my Western Digital Live TV Plus also, but when I try to play a file, it just hangs.

I have been connected to my unRAID share from my Windows Home Server and have been moving files to it just fine.

Seems like there is something messed up with my SMB shares maybe?  Does anyone have any ideas?

thanks

Corey

If you copy a video file from the server to another computer, does it play?

No, I can't copy any of the files to any of my other machines.

I have tried on both of my Macs and my Windows Home Server.  On the WHS, I get a message "The specified network name is no longer available".  Even though I have a constant ping to the server, and can browse the share just fine.

As often as not these types of problems are hardware.  Typically network cards and memory.

Have you done any tests locally?  MD5 checksums?  Are there errors in the system log?  Is the network disconnecting?

Which machine on your LAN is the master-browser?  Did you perhaps boot the flash drive on one of the other machines on your LAN and it has stored its MAC address in its config/network.cfg file?

Is your router going belly-up?  It could need a reboot.

I am using the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L motherboard, which is on the approved hardware list.  This is the same MB as in my WHS.

I am not familiar with the MD5 checksum?  Do I run it on a particular file?  Can you explain a bit more on this?

I don't see any errors in the system log.

I don't believe the network is disconnecting.  I am running CAT-5e throughout the house and haven't had issues in the past.  I have multiple HTPCs streaming from my WHS without issues.

My WHS has the registry flag set to be the master browser.  I haven't checked my Macs.

I created the flash drive on my WHS, but never booted it.  I haven't checked every device on my network, but my WHS does not have the same MAC address.

I am not aware of any issues with my router.  I restarted it and no change.  It is a Apple Airport Extreme, and I haven't had any issues with it.  Nothing in the error log on the router, no indication there are any problems with it.

OK, came home and ran the full memtest and no errors came up.

Checked every device on my network, and none of them have the same MAC address as my unRAID server.

Seems so strange that I can move files from my Windows Home Server to the shares on my unRAID, but can't play files from the shares?  I don't understand how that could be??

Also seems so weird my WD Live TV Plus can see the files in the shares, but hangs when I try to play a file?  I don't understand.

What worries me even more is that I can't copy the files off the  unRAID back onto my machines.  I have quite a bit of data over there, is it lost?

Post a syslog.  I suspect an issue with your NIC.

Here you go.  I have no clue what to even be looking for...

Thanks so much for everyone's help on this.

Oh, for the love of.....

Just came across these:

I have the rev .2 version of this board.  AUGH!!!!!!!

So confusing that it is on the approved hardware list.  Is there anyway this could be changed or at least make a note of it??

I will order a new board and try that out I guess.  what a mess this has been.

What about my data?  I have no way to copy it off.  Can I just leave the drives in, get a new MB and power it up with the same flash drive?

If you can try a different network card it might eliminate the need to replace the entire motherboard.  Just disable the network interface on the motherboard in the BIOS, plug in a cheap network card and go onward.

Yes you can easily swap motherboards.  Worst case you'll need to use the "devices" page to assign the disks to their respective slots in the array.  The array will not start if you have them in the wrong "ports" on the motherboard.

Hmm.  Not sure if I have a NIC laying around, but I will check.

From what I understand in the posts, it was the HPA of the Gigabyte board that was causing the problems, wasn't it?  Replacing the NIC won't solve that, will it?

I thought you were complaining about the network connectivity.  No the alternate NIC will not fix he HPA issue.

Sorry that you ran into this.  I've added a note for this mobo to the wiki so that hopefully others don't follow your path.

Unfortunately it looks like you'll have to replace your motherboard.  Your syslog definitely shows HPAs for two of your drives.  As you remove your motherboard your server may say to you "What are you doing, David?"  This is normal, even if your name isn't David.

Hey Joe, this is of interest to me.  Sorry to hi-jack the thread but this caught my eye.  I am new to the Unraid family, but not to computers in general.  I have no concerns about putting all the parts together myself and firing the system up.  I started off with the free version to see if this system would fit my needs, I now own a Pro version and am running 4.5.6.  Tried to upgrade to 4.6 and the system just kept rebooting itself, but that is for another time.  I think I played with all the config files too much and have too many "extra" (read error) lines.

My real question is about the user shares.  If I reformat the thumb drive and re-install 4.5.6 (or can I go up to 4.6 in one swoop?) will I loose my user shares?  Or can I copy that folder off the thumb drive before formatting and replace the newly formatted folder after re-installing all the Unraid system files?  Of course I will pay special attention to assigning the parity drive and my seven data drives.

Thanks for the help in advance,

Or can I copy that folder off the thumb drive before formatting and replace the newly formatted folder after re-installing all the Unraid system files?

Yes, you can do that.

You can also update to 4.6 in one swoop, but I tend to take things one step at a time.

To upgrade you ONLY need to copy the bzroot and bzimage files from the new distribution to the root of your flash drive and then reboot.  You do not need to re-format the flash drive or touch the "config" folder.

I've upgraded probably 50 times and never touched the config folder.  All the shares stay as they were.

Hey Joe L.  I figured all that out and had done an upgrade already using that process (and saving the old files as bzroot.451 etc...).  However, when I tried doing that to go from 4.5.6 to 4.6 it would continually reboot the system.  Like I said, I think I botched up some of the config files to mess things up just enough.  So I went ahead and reformatted the thumb drive, placed 4.6 on there, replaced the shares config folder and all is good.  Now I can again start fresh and do things up-to-date like unmenu.  Some threads on this forum start off like two years ago and are still running with over 50 pages of information.  Those can be difficult sometimes to pick out what information is needed for everyone's needs.  But for me, that is part of the fun and appeal of UnRaid.
