Cache and Unassigned disks only

Is it possible to have a cache and unassigned disks only system?  Seems like something that should be possible, but I can't figure out how to do it.  It looks like Array can't start without a data disk assigned to a slot.  Is this correct?  Any workaround?

    At least one data device needs to be assigned, but you can use anything, even an old small flash drive for example.
