First Time unRaid User - Dell PowerEdge?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, excited to get my first unRaid server going.  Want to get a pre-built server that is ready to go...was thinking of getting a Dell PowerEdge R710 6-Bay server or something similar on eBay.  Needs to rack mount, preferably 2U.  Are there any unRiad software compatibility issues with PowerEdge parts?  Does anyone have experience with the PERC H700 RAID Controllers in some of these Dell servers?  Are traditional RAID cards ok to use?  Linus (LTT) mentioned HBA cards might be best for accurate drive health reporting etc, let me know your thoughts!

Use cases:

general photo/video archival storage (100,000-200,000 files)

Plex for 2 person household

possibly 8 camera surveillance

PC/Mac backup (5-6 systems)

Thanks in advance!

Ben

My only experience with RAID controllers and Unraid is extremely negative.

Here is one thread describing what you can expect.

Thanks for your insite jonathan.  Will be sure to use a HBA in IT mode and avoid hardware RAID.
