December 13, 201015 yr Kingston MobileLiteG2 Reader with 8GB Secure Digital High Capacity SDHC Flash Card - FCR-MLG2+SD4/8GB $16.99 To my knowledge, this is the only SD/microSD USB adapter that has been proven to have a unique GUID and is therefore compatible with unRAID. See Queeg's test results here. The primary benefits of using a SD/microSD adapter like this instead of a standard USB flash drive are as follows: Scalable/expandable storage No need to contact LimeTech if the flash media dies, you can just replace it with another SD card and maintain the same GUID (so your unRAID license will still be valid) You can have multiple unRAID configs on different cards and swap them at will (rebooting each time). Might be nice for testing out betas and such if you can't afford a separate test server. In the same way, you could easily create a backup of your unRAID config on a separate SD card. This backup would then be bootable if your primary SD card were to fail. The included SDHC card is a class 4, which means it may be a bit slow if you boot unRAID from it. If you don't reboot your server often then this shouldn't be an issue. If you want faster boot times, use a class 6 or better SDHC card.
December 13, 201015 yr So I read through Queeg's thread and I'm still confused. Is this the only thing I need to purchase, or do I need another adapter as well? Was it every fully confirmed that the GUID's are unique to the READER and not the memory?
December 13, 201015 yr Author Yes, the GUID is unique to the reader. For an SD card, you don't need another adapter. If you wish to use a microSD card, you will probably need to use a microSD to SD adapter, like this one: Even though the MobileLiteG2 has a built-in microSD card slot, Queeg seems to think that it will not be bootable as it will not be read as the first partition, or something like that. I don't know if he actually tried it or not.
December 13, 201015 yr The MobileLite G2 is a portable reader that has two slots. In linux that means it can mount two partitions. One fits the microSD and one fits the SD. The SD slot is what linux sees as the first partition. For whatever reason the boot partition ( unRAID ) has to be the first partition on the device. Yes, I tested it. You can use both but unRAID has to be in the larger (first) slot. The MobileLite G2 is the first to be certified (as such) by testing from multiple forum members as having unique serial numbers. I have a second type that I haven't had time to test yet but I'm certain it will get certified when time or members are willing to help. I have 5 of these second type and they all have unique numbers.

Regardless, even if syslinux did not work, you could just use "grub" instead of syslinux and boot any partition you like.
December 13, 201015 yr So if i purchased one of these I would have to purchase another licence key to use it? I already have two usb keys....Or would LIMETECH transfer your key to another device for you.

December 14, 201015 yr Thanks for the clarification, Queeg. +1 Now I understand the partition issue. What is the second type you speak of? I ordered one of these, btw.
December 14, 201015 yr Thanks for the clarification, Queeg. +1 Now I understand the partition issue. What is the second type you speak of? I ordered one of these, btw. The second one is a Transcend portable reader. I've seen these for sale with various sizes of microSD chips. I've noticed that Transcend has several models of little readers but the others show the flash chip sticking out the side while the ones I have chosen has the chip safely down inside from the end. The Transcend model is about 1/4 the size of the MobileLight G2 which is nice. The MobileLight G2 is built like a tank by comparison.
December 14, 201015 yr Now these are awesome ideas. I really like the fact that they can be used to boot. I wonder what the read/write life of a SD card is compaired to that of a USB. I'm sure alot higher, but hey it burns out swap out another. Thanks for bringing these to light.
December 14, 201015 yr Picked one up. It appears you can buy the same adapter with no card for 8bucks. I only know because I was buying some other stuff and I have a few cards laying around.
February 11, 201313 yr I just picked up the tiny MicroSD only version of the MobileLiteG2 and it seems to be generating it's own GUID as well. Tested 2 very different MicroSD cards (diff manufacturer and size) and both reported the same GUID in UnRAID. Not only was it a bit cheaper, but it's not as large of a wart sitting off the back of the server. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139080 (searching around might find you cheaper options.)

Sounds like the GUID is coming from the reader alright. The real question, though is whether or not the GUID is unique to each reader. If they all have the same GUID then the unRAID license can't be associated with it.

February 11, 201313 yr The Mobile lite G2 readers have unique GUID's. This has been tested and verified.

I had one of those. It will be black listed if the serial number is a number sequence still. Mine was something like: 98765432109876 or maybe the other direction.

If you use 5.0 beta12a or greater it will say: "Registered to: Blacklisted - contact [email protected] (-1)"

I'm not sure why, but I did.)
February 14, 201313 yr contact Tom because I bought a little microsd reader (the elago one). Although the guid looked (to me) legit, it turns out it was already registered to someone else. Meaning all elago microsd readers have the same guid and are not unique per device
