Unraid OS version 6.8.3 available

Yeah, but my ssd is NOT a cache drive... it is NOT configured as cache, i don't need caching. Even though it shows up as 'cache' in unraid's list of storage (which is very annoying). Also not using mover. Way to obfuscated for me.

So, i can not create a 'cache only' share since... there is no cache.

If i add a share from unraid itself 'cache only' it is not getting created. Syslog shows 'cannot create directory, no medium found'...

If i manuall create the share in /mnt/users it does show up in the unraid shares, but it is created on a random fixed disk. If i then change it to 'cache only', by magic, it is gone...

You will either have to use the flash drive or setup a syslog server on another computer.  I did setup one on a WIN10 machine a while back when I was playing the syslog server and it was not that difficult.  Google is your friend in this case...

The name 'cache' is historical  from its original purpose - now-a-days it can simply be an application drive/pool.   Whether anything is cached is controlled at the individual share level.  The Unraid 6.9.0 release brings with it the option to call a pool anything you like.

You mean set up a syslog CLIENT then on e.g. win10? Unraid does the serving part...?

I believe in this case, your nomenclature is not really correct.  If you think about from one particular viewpoint, Your Unraid server is generating and sending a file to the PC for storage.  Thus, the Unraid server should be considered the client machine and the PC is the server.  By the way, there are many uses for syslog servers on regular PC's in monitoring the syslogs from devices like routers, switches, etc so they are really quite a few of them available.

The SSD is cache, but you are not using it to cache user share writes. You can still create a cache only user share. Have you tried?

Yes, read back a few posts. If i add a cache only user share from unraid gui, it fails, if i create it manually in /mnt/user then it shows up in shares, but if i change that to cache only, it gets removed again.

You need to post your diagnostics then, ideally after doing all of the above

Yes, but i do NOT want to use the cache drive as a cache drive (with the mover etc), for me it's just an SSD. It contains dockers, apps, vm's, my nextcloud repository etc. When stuff gets downloaded, i've written my own scripts that downloads everything on the ssd first, repairs it, and when it's done, it moves it to the right place on the array. I don't need and i don't want unraid's mover/cache combi.

As stated, you do not need to use the cache drive as a "cache" drive.  That's all dependent upon whether the shares are all set to use the cache or not.  The usual method of using unRaid and a cache drive is to enable the cache drive, and then disable the shares from using it.

If nothing else, it's far far less confusing for everyone (you as why you can't create a cache only share), and us when looking at diagnostics and seeing that /mnt/user exists, but /mnt/user0 doesn't.

It froze again yesterday evening. Could not even ipmi into it.

After restart syslog shows nothing out of the ordinary. Never had this with previous version.

I’m not sure how syslog server on unraid will help? I guess i need a syslog client as well on another machine?

Maybe i’ll try the option to sync the syslog on the flash to begin.

Happened again this morning. syslog was synced to the flashdrive so i can at least show some logging:

Rebooted at 8:32 this morning, looks like the last logging at 4:13 before crashing was something to do with the ssd? Is there an issue with trim? I have the trim plugin running, disabled it for now...

... i know, not a sexy issue, but it happened again. This time it crashed while i was reconnecting to the Roon docker. The Roonserver sometimes loses it's library for some reason, and you have to re-select the rooncore in the remote app, and rebuild the libraries. After adding 2 folders, roon stopped working, and took the array with it. Now, this time i recalled that one of the previous times the array crashed, it was also during issues with Roon, so my conclusion is that the roon docker f*cks things up big time and takes the array down with it... unraid can not be reached, not even over IPMI. IPMI only shows powered up state, but nothing works. No gui, no shares, no dockers, no plugins, just dead. Which to me is surprising, wasn't that the whole reason why we want containerized apps? So they did not influence the host at all?

Syslog is synced to the flash drive, but it doesnt show anything usefull. Last entry was a spindown of some drives at 4:10 this morning, and the next entry is the reboot i performed... no clues, no mentioning of anything interesting.

I have Roon and it’s not crashing.

The other server without Roon is crashing on occasion (not saying it’s same issue but just to say Roon shouldn’t be).

Roon does push a disk while it’s scanning and so on so possibly something more down the i/o path given your comments about disks. Could even be sata cable.

Perhaps not useful to fixing your Roon docker issue but I was having similar problems where Roon server (docker) would become unresponsive. Reboot of unRaid didn't help. Restarting the docker would result in the Docker service hanging (at least the admin in Chrome did). I gave up on it and bought an inexpensive NUC with which to run Roon ROCK and have had zero problems since.

Hi, my system was running fine with 6.6.6, but the header on the main page said "update to 6.8.3" so I clicked it.  It did it's thing and said I needed to reboot.  I clicked reboot and now nothing.  I can no longer access the server from //tower.  I did a hard turnoff and restarted the server, but I still can't access it.  What do I do?

Thanks!

Begin by connecting a monitor and keyboard up to your server and see what you see on the screen.

You must not have looked at the webUI in a very long time. If you are going to "set and forget" be sure you have Notifications setup to alert you immediately by email or other agent as soon as a problem is detected.
