(SOLVED) Reuse parity as data drive + add larger parity drive

Featured Replies

Hi there
My array has 9x 4TB data drives and a 5TB parity drive.
All disks are SMART error-free, parity is current and find no errors.
I'd like to replace the parity drive with a new 6TB pre-cleared drive, and reuse the existing 5TB parity drive as a new data drive.
The new 6TB drive is powered up and seen by Unraid.
The array is set to not auto-start.
Unraid 6.7.2, OS Plus licence

Could I:
1) stop the array
2) set the parity drive to none
3) start the array so unraid forgets the 5TB parity drive
4) stop the array
5) assign the new 6TB drive to parity
6) assign the 5TB (ex-parity) drive as a new data drive
7) init/format the new 5TB data drive
8) start the array
9) let parity automatically rebuild
10) check no errors

Many thanks, Judy

The steps are not quite right as you cannot change the parity drive and add a new data drive at the same time.

What you want to do is to follow the procedure for Upgrading a parity disk and then when that completes follow the procedure for Adding a data disk using the old parity disk as the one to add.

Thank you - parity is now building on the new 6TB drive

When finished, I will add the old 5TB drive as a new data drive.
