USB (that can turn off and on) Passthrough to VM

Featured Replies

Hello, I've searched, but haven't been able to find anything to address the following issue:

  • I'm connecting an external device to my unraid server physically via USB.
  • This external device can be turned on and off.
  • As this device is turned on and off, I need it available again in the VM without rebooting the VM.

I have only been able to get it available after rebooting the VM. Eventually, this would apply to multiple external devices that can turn on and off.

You have 2 choices:

  • Pass through a USB controller (either onboard (Ryzen / TR4 mobo has at least 1 available) or a PCIe card) to your VM. Any USB devices plugged into a passed-through controller will automatically attach to the VM (that has the controller).
  • Install the libvirt hotplug USB plugin. You can manually attach USB devices to the VM after VM boot.

Ok, just tried the libvirt usb plugin, and yes, manual attaching after the VM boots.

As for the PCI card, are there any recommendations? I need a low profile, compatible with a Supermicro X9DRi-LN4F+ Motherboard.

i'm using a cheap Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720201 USB 3.0 Host Controller | USB controller
like this https://www.amazon.ca/Sedna-Express-Adapter-uPD720202-Connector/dp/B00PERIIEE

If I find my shipping invoice I'll update with exact.

Let us know how it goes :)
