Unraid tower upgrade help/advice

Featured Replies

Hey everyone

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my unraid tower

Current set up

Motherboard: Foxconn H61MXL-K

Cpu: Intel® Pentium® CPU G630 @ 2.70GHz

Ram: 6 GiB DDR3

Hard drives:

1 x 1tb seagate

1 x 2tb western digital

1 x 3tb seagate

1 x 6tb seagate

Been using this set up for about a year as a Plex/emby setup to play my Blu-ray's on a local network on the Xbox 1 and fire stick without a partiy drive or cache drive

But now after testing unraid and seeing it works for my needs I have now purchased a key and want to upgrade to a more powerful stable and reliable machine but with a few more requirements.

so basically now I want to run:

A Windows 10 VM general use

(e.g M.s office, web browsing, emails)

Plex and emby running side by side

Emby will always be played locally

Plex will be for remote use

Maximum users would be 6

not all at once maybe 2 users simultaneously occasionally

a cloud for all my photos and video's

(Phone/smart cam/drone)

And maybe open hab for smart home

So after realising my system is pretty pants I decided im going to build a whole new set up motherboard, cpu, ram etc.

I have a budget of about £500

I'm already upgrading my drives to wd red and adding a parity and cache drive.

So my questions are:

Should I use a Intel or amd CPU?

(I'm thinking intel)

Any recommendations on cpu?

(I'm thinking intel i5 8th gen)

Do I need a graphic card or can I use the HDMI port onboard for the windows 10 VM? (22inch Acer pc monitor)

Any recommendations on a decent motherboard ?

Looking for a full ATX board as this will be going on a wall not in a case

(ASUS Prime Z390-A?)

Also is it possible to use the m.2 for a cache drive?

Thanks everyone

Tinni
