non parity array or parity disk exclusion

Recommended Posts

The request starts from a need: I have a lot of backup data that really I don't care.

For what is my current unRaid knowledge unassigned disks are going to be unsupported.

Unassigned disk are not featuring smart array features as data spanning over multiple HDD.

I don't know if is best to implement it as:

- put all drives in the array and exclude some from parity

- manage a non parity array

Or maybe this already exists and I am a total newbye?!?!

Thanks!

First I must ask, why do you need your backup data to be not on the array? Are you concerned about speed? Number of disks perhaps?

To your specific questions.

-You cannot exclude array drives from parity protection.

-You can have a cache pool (and in an upcoming version multiple cache pools) where drives can be combined in RAID0.

Because here there is a lot of people complaining about parity disk rebuilding process.

I don't think I've seen any of those complaints.

Unraid parity is realtime. Rebuilding parity isn't something that is done often. In fact, you may not ever need to do it after the initial parity build.

What do you mean by that?

Not exactly.  Unassigned Disks will still be supported via the plugin

It has already been announced that 6.9 will include multiple cache pools.  Which is exactly what you're talking about.
